Well as far as i know the 1.6 was rated at 95hp and the 1.8 was rated at 120. I have owned three suzukis including a 88 samuri and and 2 dr kick with a 1.6 and this 4 dr blows them away. I average 25mpg around town and 28 to 29 on highway. The tranmission i belive is the same on all sidekicks its not divorced like the sami.  the engine is  all aluminum and has twin over head cams and is muiltiport fuel injection. easy to put open air intake as there is no map sensor. If i learn how to post pictures on here i will do that.  I also learned that the jdm spec 2.0 is almost the identicle engine but v6 and will bolt up to the 1.8 tranmission or you can bolt the all wheel drive one.

How is the power in the 1.8 cause im debating the 98 sidekick sport 1.8 or a 99 grand vitra 2.5v6 both 5 spds.

Is there a big difference in power in the two cause the difference in price is like 3g's more for the grand vitra.

How is the power in the two motors

The power in the sidekick 1.8 is awsome so is the fuel mileage. The only reason i did not get a vitra is cause i feel the interior is cheaper and the body is to average it looks like a rav 4 and most of the other small suvs. the power difference is 45 hp  between the two. I have pulled 2 atvs  before just fine and had no problem keeping highway speeds. I have also raced vitras had no problems passing it. I have a 2 1/2 inch magnaflow exhaust  open air intake. i had jet performance make a chip and it has a centerforce clutch.  the only suzuki i would tade my kick in for would be a xl 7. 2.5 v6 165hp 1.8 i4 120 both have dohc and coil pack with chain drive.

The 1.8 and the 2.0 4cylinder are identical in apparance.
I owned a 1.6, 2.0 4cyl and now own a 2.5 V6 Tracker. NIGHT and DAY differance!!!. The 2.5 V6s' power was bumped up on the 2004 TrackVits.
Also I don't think the 1.8 will bolt up to a 1.6 trans.

Well i guess i'm just stuck in the thought that suzukis are ment to be square. That is why i refuse to go way of the gv. also they don't offer more towing capabilties or room. they do offer push button four wheel drive on 04, which to me is going agianst why i own a suzuki. I like simple locking hubs manule shift and frame on body. That is why i love suzuki. God knows you don't buy them for hauling power. But please don't get mad at me for that is my opinon. And as to the hood scoop thankyou for the comments. All it is though is a universal hood scoop i picked up at pep boys and had painted and put on.

*Also I don't think the 1.8 will bolt up to a 1.6 trans.*

I just had my 1.8 trans rebuilt (thanks Mike) and the transmission is the same as the 1.6, but the bell housing is different.  That is an easy swap.  The 1.8  manual uses a hydraulic clutch as well and there is a casting on the bell housing to bolt that part on.  The main shaft (input) is the same length as the 1.6.  FYI

P.S. Heather, I'll sell you my '98 kick sport

Yeah, but you live all the way over in Minnesooota.

;) Unless you're comin' to Moab, then, in which case, how much do you want for it, and what color is it?

As a matter of fact I am going to Moab again this year.  It is a black 1998 kick Sport with the bottom 1/4 painted black as well (over the factory tan color).  It has the 1.8 with the 5 speed.  I put 2" coil spacers in it and am running 265x16's.  Rims are black factory steel as well.  It has 88xxx miles on it.  Full size spare.  I'm thinking around $4200.00?  Let me know what you think.  Jeff
