T-case gears?
« on: July 30, 2008, 03:35:58 PM »
Hey Guys!

I was thinking of putting in some t-case gears in my 86 sammy. I just finnished my 1.6 EFI swap and have about 500km on it.. I love it but i still need a little more for the highway. Im running 31" tires. Should i go with the 4-16-1 or the 4-9-1 ?? I do alot of road driving with a little offroad now and then mostly for fishing.. Any advice would be great..

Tom

well not posative what youre numbers meen, im running a 4to 1, i think they said it gives a 14% reduction in 2 hi, i bought it 8 years ago so im not sure, it seamed to help a little on the road, dont hit the pavement much anymore, but i ended up changing the axel gears to 5.38 anyway, it did help alot in low range i think the stock setup is around 2 to 1, iim sure sombody who uses theres on road with the same tire will chime in , i know they make a 6 to 1 now, not sure what the 2 hi reduction would be, maybe 20%? that should help quite abit
if you were right, dont you think i'd agree with you?

I have 31" tsl's, just finished my 1.6 efi conversion, and have a 6.4:1 tx case from trail tough.  Today was the first day I got it out on the road and so far its a pretty sweet setup.  These have a 17% reducton in high and although I have only taken it up to about 50 mph so far it does make the larger tires and steel rims less noticable.  Low is a 181% reduction so it definately geared down but with the stock diff ratio its not bad.  I haven't seen what it can do in 5th under 4low yet so I can't advice if it is too slow or not.  There are plenty of 4ish to 1 tx cases out there for sale on the different forums and that may be better for a occasional offroad vehicle.  If you want to just buy from a vendor I definately recommend trail tough.  You can send in your tx case or do like I did and pay the $250 core and get a nicely cleaned tx case already with the gears and send in your core after the swap.  After about 2 weeks they'll refund the core.  Be prepared for the speedometer to be off.  Mine is about 20 mph off vs GPS.   ;D  Not sure how to fix that.

I have trail gears 6.5:1 T-case gears in my rig.  I was running it with stock 205's for a while and it was really slow!  5th gear low range was topping out at about 12 to 15mph (or so my speedo said)

If your sami is going to be seeing more road than trail it would probably be best to go with the 4.9:1 gears.  According to the vendors it will bring a 31" tire back to stock and have a decent low range for the occasional trail ride.

Putting the gears in was easiest thing to install in my sami, its very straight forward.
I brought the transfer case to a shine, rebuilt it, and installed the gears in a couple of hours.
