Guy Hammer Memorial GPS Challenge
« on: October 24, 2003, 03:08:50 AM »
Guy Hammer was a fellow Zuker that recently passed away. His 4x4 group, the Oregon Bushhackers, have decided to name their annual GPS challenge after Guy, who was always a volunteer for the event. If you have an inklin' to try this, I'd say go for it. It is a real blast...

GPS Challenge Description:

The GPS Challenge is a rally. It is driven at moderate (legal)
speeds over a mix of asphalt highways, gravel roads, forest service
roads, and trails. Teams of two vehicles follow instructions with
GPS coordinates and elapsed times and try to match the times on the
instructions. The winning team is the closest to the time in the
instructions.

Minimum number of teams is 8. Maximum is 15. First come, first
serve. I will team up single vehicles, if they cannot find
teammates. At least one vehicle must have a timing device
(stopwatch, watch, chrono) and a GPS. There must be a navigator in
at least one vehicle. Standard Oregon Bushhackers gear is
recomended. OHV stickers are required.

The course is designed to be run with stock 4x4 vehicles in good
working condition. We prerun the course in a stock Explorer, to
ensure it is not too much challenge. There are tight spots, so you
will probably get some brush rubbing against your paint, and a full
size vehicle will be "very" challenged to get through a couple of
spots. This is a good run to see what your stock rig is capable of,
and also a good way to learn how to use your GPS.

After the run, we will have a pot luck at the end of the last leg.
Bring your favorite dish. We usually finish awards around 8 or 9
p.m.

Prizes are donated by local dealers and shops. Some sort of trophy
will be given for 1st through 3rd place. This year, as a response
to the requests I have received for the last couple of years, we
will give trophies to two classes:

Geeks- All the gear you can stuff in your rig. Open class.
Minimalists- Only a basic GPS and a timing device. No computers,
maps,palm pilots, map gps, etc.

We would love to have a big turnout this year. Guy Hammer was one
of the first to volunteers to help pull off this event. He ran
checkpoints every year, and we will visit some of his checkpoints
enroute. We will also have a geocache event during the lunch
break.

If you have any questions, or would like to sign up, you can send me
email or post them to the list. I will be out of the country from
the 10th through the 20th, but Dale Mosby or Ed Bodnar can help you
out.
