Total noob here. Just bought a 96 X90 4x4.... now what?
« on: February 28, 2009, 03:28:39 PM »
Ok it is a 96 with a 16 valve 1.6l it looks like.  I bought from a 55 year old woman who had owned it for the last ten years.  It had 58k when she got it and in ten years she only put 14k miles on it!

I doubt much maintenance has been done to it.   So,  where do I start?  If the timing belt goes,  will it scrap my valve train like a Honda?

What are the tallest tires I can put on it with out modification?

Yeah, it's an interference engine, 60k timing belt maintenance... ie it's time if it hasn't been done. I'm in the same boat, bought ole lady owned 68k tracker... no maintenance but clean. Awaiting gates t-belt kit.

Tires = 235/75r15 with no lift. G/l with it. :)

Lol, with tidy profit to boot!!  ::)

Acually, I dont think it is a interferance motor. The answer here is that the service manual is wrong. There is a guy that tried it, and nothing hits. I asked in a thread a couple weeks ago, and nobody has ever had damage while breaking a belt.

How deep do I have to tear into the motor to inspect the timing belt?

It's a non-interference motor. Many many many people have verified this when tearing down their engine. Inspect everything you can think of, and swap out every fluid you can think of (don't forget the often neglected break, coolant, diff / trans / t-case fluids etc). Inspect anything that looks rubber. A lot of people are quick to replace things without inspecting them... I'm not. I'll check out the plugs, wires, cap etc. If they look questionable at all, I swap 'em out. If not, I clean 'em up and move on with my life.

FYI, for an X-90 noob  ;) Most any modification/aftermarket items for a similar year Sidekick/Tracker will work on the X-90. Some need some minor tweeking but most everything is the same (besides the body and some basketry and exhaust pieces to make it fit in the smaller engine compartment. Do a search in the for sale section for posts made by me 'zukipilot' and you will find where I had my 98 up for sale a few years ago. It had a clamini 2" lift but I ran the same size tires I ran with no lift (did not want to cut fenders). That post should have the size tire I ran. It fit tight but the only trimming I had to do was on the bumper cover.
