True Neutral transfer case
« on: April 07, 2004, 01:27:00 PM »
One of the members of our Men's Group who is doing the labor on Rescue Sami mentioned he had seen a kit for the transfer that allowed a true neutral for towing.  He can't remember where he saw it listed.  I have never heard of this.  Where is it located and do we need it?

When I had done my t-case gears I left out one of the detent balls so I could have 2Lo. By doing so I also have a neutral neutral, if that makes sense. All my shafts are freed up and not connecting to each other at all. This maybe what he's talking about. If your flat towing it, just put the transmission in 2nd and the t-case in neutral. Every stop for gas just start the sami to circulate a little oil and you'll be fine.

sorta off topic
is it bad to drive in 4low with your front hubs unlocked?
sometimes i do if im parked on pavement on a steep hill or something rather than riding the heck out of the clutch in 2hi... this involves at MOST 20ft of driving, hardly that

I just called my friend to get a bit more information.  It is a kit you install in the transfer case at the shifter.  Also gives 2 low.

I went to E-Bay and didn't find it there.

The sammy case, the neutral position is a 4wd position. When in neutral, both the drivelines are locked together. With this setup, the bearings don't have proper lubrication. When you put the 2lo mod in the case, you end up with a "TRUE NEUTRAL" position, it makes the case last a lot longer when you flat tow. Also makes the steering effort a lot less when you have a front locker and need low range on a corner on the trail, but don't need the front wheels pulling you around the corner.

This sounds like what my friend was describing.  Where is the setup you refered to available from?

Captain Jack, do you still have the Sami trans?  Or did you get the 1.6L trany also??

On the 2wl and not locking in the front.  It's not a problem at all.  I would do that all the time also.  I would use my truck to move my trailer around the yard and stuff like you do.

If you think about it, the lockouts are made to spin while the axils are sitting still going down the road.  When you put it into 2wd low and not locking in the front hubs, the axils and wheels are spinning almost the same speed, unless your turning.

So there's no real problem in doing it.

Not at all. ALl this changes from being in 2 lo is that your front driveshaft is spinning (as if you're in 4lo) - however, it just doesn't move the front wheels because the hubs aren't locked. No damage what so ever, and to whoever said watch your speed --- uhh, just don't go any faster than you could normally go in 4lo with the hubs locked... duh?

Did anybody read my post?  ::)  There is no "kit" neccesary to "BUY". All you need to do is remove one detent ball for the selector and then you'll have 2Lo. There are no parts to add and is simple to do so there is no reason to PAY someone to do it.

O.K. here I'll do your homework. Check this out.
