There is nothing wrong with a good used locker, it just means
it's seen trail time and is well trained  ;)

I've broke them both new and used. Depends really, on how hard your planning on running your Rig that day. Another huge factor I have in breaking is how many ponies I have under the hood. I can't seem to get smart enough to gear down and use less ponies. If the price is right and it didn't have alot of abuse on it visually I would jump on it. All you can do is break it!

Depends on what type of locker. Case lockers are more expensive as they replace the case and require gear setup. Lunchbox lockers replace the side and axle gears inside the case and require no gear setup.

Lunchbox lockers, I have 2 pr of discs with teeth that mate together and use pins/springs to keep operating. I would check to make sure the edges of the teeth are still cut straight and not rounded. Most of the time, a spring may get broken and this ratchets the discs/teeth. New pins/spring kits are under $20.

Couplers replace the stock side gears, most of the time they
are not needed, unless the side gears are worn really bad.

I have never used couplers in all of the lockers I have installed
so you should be fine with out them in your project

People say that the lockers that reuse stock sidegears are more forgiving if your axle housing is bent.  I've ran both types and never had any issues with either type.  The type that reuses the stock sidegears is cheaper (to buy new), so I always buy that type, when buying new.  Lock-right also says to buy the type that has the replacement side couplers, if your sidegears are worn.....but you could also just buy new/different sidegears and still buy the one that reuses stock sidegears.

I dont see how anyone can break a properly installed locker. The worst I have ever done is broke the pins when I broke an axle under heavy torque load. I assume the quick unload when the axle snapped caused a severe backlash shearing the pins. Replacement pins are $8 from fastenal. I prefer the lockers without side gears myself.

Got a part number from Fastenal for the pins?  Can you get the springs from there as well?

I know you can buy the spring and pin kits from vendors for around $20, but alternative sources are always good to know of too.

I just took my broken pin into Fastenall to see if they had anything that would work. They had the exact pins in stock so I bought a whole box and threw the extras in the tool bag in case I needed them somewhere far from home. I think the whole Box of 10 was like $8. I dont know if they sell the springs.

Ok.  I looked on their website and found some alloy steel pins that were the right size....just didn't know if they were as strong as the actual locker pins or not.
