VW Diesel Conversion
« on: December 10, 2003, 05:30:43 AM »
There  is a guy not to far from me that does VW diesel conversions for Sami's. Has anyone ever thought of putting a VW Turbo diesel in a Sidekick? I know they are supposed to be really nice in a Sami. What do you guys think

I'd do it in a heartbeat if I could find a TDI for a reasonable price.

Jacob,
It's supposed to be do-able.  I belong to a samurai diesel forum, and I believe there was some discussion around oil burners in kicks.   Actually, I think the kick transfer case is better for the conversion because of the 1 to 1 high range.  In the sammies they run stock diff gears, and big tires (33"-35") just to get the diesel engine in the correct rpm range at cruise speed.  You can get more info here

James,
that's the problem, VW diesels are bring high $.  I seen one in the nickel adds last week for $1295 us.  It was a 1.6l the add didn't say whether it was a td or not.

If you want, you can add a Turbo to any
Diesel engine, all it will do is clean up the
exhaust, and cool down the burn,(cooler
exhaust temps) as well as perk up the ponies,
the only problem could be if it's a weak bottom
end, (which the VW is not) it could cause rod or
main problems with the increased power output,
but with the VW this should not be a problem.

I hear ya...I buddy of mine blew his Jetta 1.9 diesel engine...$2700 CDN just for a block...cost him $5K to get it back on the road. I keep telling him to write it off so I can grab the engine ;) I keep an eye on the classifieds to find a rusted out or bent up Jetta/Golf diesel to pick up cheap.
