I want to build some sort of front winch bumper for my samurai. How thick of steel do I need to make it hold up to a decent sized winch? I have some 3/16" thick angle iron, could I make frame extensions and have this be strong enough?

I would make the winch mount plate and frame ext. with the 3/16 then fab the rest with 1/8 or 10 gauge. Built a front bumper for my last tracker out of 3/16 ( looked like the calmini one, tough as nails and weighted as much as the engine) If you build it to strong and hit something usually the frame bends first ( big bucks repair )
Hope that helps some

The angle iron is 3X3 I would probably box it in and weld it all together. Should I bolt the extensions to the frame or weld it?
