Winch on the rear?

Winch on the rear?

How come you never see vehicles with winches on the rear? I was thinking about adding one. Why should I not do it (except that it would be difficult to fit in with the rear hatch without hanging too low). But, if I could fit one in the rear without being too obtrusive, wouldn't it be a good idea?

Acutally they are great to have there as well.  What I did on my Willies was a class 3 hitch receiver front and rear.  Then I just had my winch mounted on a custom hitch platform.  I was great, paid for one winch but felt like I had two.  Also when I was not wheelin I pulled it and kept it inside.  No worries about someone making off with it.  Something about a big red W that says steal me I guess.

I figure if I'm pointed a direction I want to go that way.  And if I need to go backwards, someone else can pull me back.  :D

Yeah, but if someone behind you needs a little love on a difficult / narrow trail, and it's hard to pull strap 'em... it's nice to have a winch on back. I'm also going the Class 3 route. Already have the front, and winch. Just need rear / platform & wiring.

My thing was that this is more of a "safari adventure" type vehicle for me. I don't really know anyone else to go offroading with for the time being, and it seems to me that it would be just as important for a lone explorer to be able to back away from his mistakes as it would be to pull himself through them. Id also consider one of those portable ones that you just hook to your battery, but if I have more than two people in the car there wouldnt really be any good places to store it.

However, thats not a bad idea about making the winch removable so I can just use the same one on the front or back. Though if I am stuck in deep water it would be kindof a pain to try to mount it under water! So I might just buy another cheap one to use back there.

It has been my experience that once you get stuck you have nothing BUT time on your hands and once you get done cussing yourself you can then spend your new found free time unsticking yourself..or walking.

There is a tool company that makes cheap stuff you can get a winch from. They even have gas powered winches that are a little chainsaw style. That cheap place has electric winches that have a plate on the bottom that has holes in it so you can chain it to your front or back and it's handy cause you can hook it to anyone you are with.
I built a receiver carrier for my winch and bought several 2"x 12" receiver hitches that I welded to my trailer, tow bar on my Samurai and will eventually add one to my custom front bumper. The bad part about the receiver style is the wiring. the quick connect plugs for winches are outrageously priced!

I have a receiver style winch that I use front and rear on my kick has come in quite handy a few times

I'm making my own. Jumper cables, or welding wire, and the quick disconnect plugs are easy to get. Should be able to wire my truck F&R for about $60.

Ooh I see.

My worry was that if the winch mount is half way under water or mud, I wouldnt want to have to try to align nuts and bolts in that. Even just using fixed studs and wing nuts, there is still a good chance Id lose the wing nuts in the mud and water.

I bought quick tabs that I use on my auger bits that are spring loaded so when you slip the winch in the tabs spring out through the pin holes. When you want to take it out you just squeeze the tabs in. Nothing to drop in the mud in this set up!
