??? Anyone know what the toothed gear opposite of the ring gear is for (95 track) ? I'm installing an ARB air locker, and the plate that the ring gear bolts go thru that came with the ARB does not have this toothed gear. I suspect it's something to do with the speedo, as there is a pickup in the carrier and an electrical connector outside. I'm wondering if I can press it off and press it on the ARB. Looks possible if it's needed. Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's for the anti-lock brake system.

??? OK, I'm stumped. I wasn't even aware I had anti lock brakes. Would'nt that require some kind of wheel speed sensors and more electronics?

Nope, on the 95 like mine,it's rear wheel abs only,if you look under the master cylinder you will see a log looking valve with brake lines connected to it and a few wires.

Allright, found it. But now I need to know what happens if I don't put that sensor gear back in. Looks like it would be a pita, if it's even possible, to remove that gear and try and install it on the ARB. Is it even worth it? And has anyone done it? Hows yours work without it?

i find that for road driving the rear abs is nice cause the rear of the trackick is pretty light and it keeps it from locking when braking into a corner (fast cornering). it also keeps it from locking in normal braking. when off road i dont think it matters.

;) Thanks Jason, I could see how it would be useful onroad, especially If I were driving it like a sports car. In this case I think I'm going to have to loose it to install the arb. Would leaving it (the tone ring as I now know it's called) off cause any other problems with the braking system? Am I going to have a idiot lite on flashing abs? I think I can live without abs , managed to for many years. I just don't want to screw up the rest of the system.

Well enough searching thru the archives and I found Hotrods post re: the abs ring and ARB's. It don't fit!! No shit, but at least I now know you can reassemble the diff without it, and just dissconnect the "brake" lite. Damn these archives are good. I guess it's all been done before, you just have to know where to look.
