got a friend, bought a sidekick and it had a rattly bottom end. well he rebuilt it , new crank, rods , bearings , pistons, rings put it all togeather and it didnt rattle but now it smoked . So he put a rebuilt head on it , still smokes. doesnt smoke at an idle , but as soon as you step on the gas it smokes, and enough smoke to not be able to drive it legaly.
it has 165# compression on all 4 cyl, and all 4 plugs are wet with oil . He aint no dummy but he is stumped ??? he wants to run over it with his chevy truck ;D
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ?

Weird, sounds like the compression rings were done correctly but maybe the oil rings were not.

Maybe this will help http://www.hastingsmfg.com/Service%20Tips/factors_influencing_oil_control.htm

hey jason check the vacumn t going to the pcv valve . freds was plugged with carbon and it smoked like a bitch

I agree with Ross
Check the Pcv
Doesn't smoke at idle (low vacuum), smokes at higher rpm (higher vacuum)...that or a badd rebuild on the head...were the guides and seals done on the head?

head i beleive is from hawk so i would think it is ok. is there any other places (egr, other vacuume)that the oil could be comming from?
this is bizzare because it didnt smoke b4 the rebuild. can anyone think of any tests he could run to check it out further? everything points to a mistake in the rebuild, but he is more than just a backyard mechanic. i have seen this guy build some pretty wicked V-8's

The second ring can be hard to tell which
way to go in right, I am leaning towards
that, I can't see bad valve guide seals
making it smoke that bad
Zaggy, your back.... and slipping idle is high
vacuum and running is lower ;)
Your smoking comes from cylinder temp and
the burning fuel burning the oil out of the cylinder

he says that the new rings came with directions and they said that the top and bottom rings went a certain way and the center ring didnt matter how it went.
it is just a bizarre situation

As an expeirienced engine builder he should
know better than that. The bottom 3 part ring
makes little difference which way it goes in, but
the Center and Top rings are critical, that is the oil
scraper, and if not installed right, does not scrape.
Time to do an inframe, you probably can just pop
the pistons out and flip the rings, and forgo the honing
since the engine has not been run many miles, but you
will need to check the cylinder walls to see if they will
are rough enough to seat the new rings.

t/y wild , i will pass on some info tonite and see if mabie he boo boo'd
thanks again

OK Wild
Yes I'm back...and yes you caught me, but you know what I meant. Been so darn busy I guess I oops'd on my terminology. Boy I guy can't make a mistake around here and not get caught...which is by the way a good thing...thanks for catching it Wild!
Locjaw...I still think I would be checking out the PCV system and the air intake connections from the manifold to valve cover.
That good of compression and no previous problems indicates a fairly heathly oops of it's own.
I know everyone makes mistakes but an experienced engine builder most likely wouldn't make one big enough to get that level of smoke from an internal error.
Keep thinking PCV and/or a line or vent form the valve cover that is hooked up wrong.
