Title: Bad knock in 1.3L
Post by: Dihnekis on January 09, 2006, 08:06:08 PM
On the drive home from my friend's house my 1.3L has developed a bad knock. It has over 160k on it, and its been eating oil like crazy lately. 3 quarts just disappeared not too long ago(regularly was about a quart a week, suddenly accelerated to 3 in about 5 days), so I had to add 3 at one time, which means i was running it on 1.2 quarts of oil. Well now it is pretty much screwed from the sounds of it, knocking like crazy. How long do you think I have before a rod decides to free itself through the engine block?

My 1.6L swap is planned for the 22nd, but this is my DD... sounds to me like I am SOL though.

Any advice on how to avoid doing that?

Not drive it is pretty much what I expect to hear, but I was hoping I had at least 2 weeks life left in the thing with the knock.

I have had a few 1.3's with what sounded like a rod knock.  All of these turned out to be a broken piston, breaking off the piston skirts.  I suspect this is also your problem as you mentioned the oil consumption.  The oil consumption is a result of your piston rings being in the oil pan.

How long can I drive it with a broken piston? To be honest, I just want this 1.3 to last me another 2 weeks of a little bit of driving, and most importantly the hour long trip to daytona to be taken out for my 1.6L at my dad's garage.

you cant really put a time on it. it may last a month or a day. if you need to drive it to get to your other engine i would park it until that time comes and then nurse it there. i had a customer with a sunfire that had no knock and then 3 weeks later got towed in with a big hole in the side of his engine from a broken con rod.

derek
