Title: Wierd Leak
Post by: SnoFalls on March 07, 2005, 03:09:43 AM
When out wheelin this saturday, I was told I was leaving a small oil spot when stopped nose up on a steep angle. Wasn't anything severe, and when I smelled one drop I wulda swore it was diff fluid. (the spot was up front a few inches drivers side of center).

I got home and let the trac sit on the clean garage floor and saw no leak (or signs of one). I let it sit and idle for 10 minutes, still not a single drop. I also checked the levels and looked like my engine oil was down about 1/2 a Q, but diff was still full.

It almost acts as if the leak only manifests when drivin in 4x4, and nose up. Think it could be the pinion bearing/seal?

I know I have a small engine oil leak that I haven't pinpointed, but I've only a few drops every now and then.

Ideas where to look or how to find (or should I bother)? What areas are prone leak spots for engine oil (rear main, distrib, ???)?
What about the diff?

I'll try to clean it up this week and get under it to look better.

Sound like you need to clean off the pumpkin/3rd member area and leave it up on ramps for a bit.  If it were me with a leak that small I would worry more about the poo that would get in when I was wheelin' if I had a bad seal than the bit of fluid coming out.  Don't want to end up with a pumpkin full of Hershey's chocolate milk.

Oh, man, I had a wierd leak once.  All my wierd leaked out, and ruined the entire state I was in!  Good thing I was in California at the time!

Sorry, humor.  I guess it could be the front diff.  Put it up on ramps and see if it leaks.

Maybe a distributor O ring as a source of the oil leak?

Might want to check the breather vent on diff, if it's plugged the diff can create alot of pressure ( it's got to go some where?)

The transmission will leak out the top where the shifter is when you tilt it up on a severe angle....mine has done it too!
