Well, I picked up a 97 sidekick in good shape yesterday. It's got 90k miles.
Oh they joys of owner ship. Now I have a samurai, a sidekick and grand vitara. Haha. I also have a ranger and a blazer though. Although the blazer will be sold soon and I rolled the ranger...
-
Congrats man. Bummer on the Ranger. Got any good parts left? ;D
-
I'm still waiting to see what the insurace company is going to offer me. I told them I want to retain ownership of the ranger. I have tons of good parts left.
Here's a pic of it:

Camburg suspension lift, 33" BFGs, JBA headers and cat back, K&K FIPK II, Slotted front discs, Jet chip, as well as all the normal stuff...
I'm considering chopping the top off and tubing it out to make it into a pure dune runner. :D
-
Did you roll it in the snow? I saw pics somewhere. Congrats on the kick.
-
Pre-Runner Ranger. Awsome ;D
Always wanted to do that.
Sorry to hear about the rollover tho.
Welcome to the Club ;D
-
Yup rolled it in the snow. I wasn't even doing anything exciting! If I would have rolled it in the desert or at the dunes that would be been a better death for my truck. Course it could have been my death as well! :D
I'd thinking about chopping the top off. Adding a cage and getting a custom soft top for it and just driving the crap out of it! :) Need to see what they want for me to retain it though...

Just a word of caution: I was listening to an automotive repair talk show a few days ago. The mechanic warned of potentially serious liability problems with driving a vehicle which has been totaled and rebuilt. If you are just off-roading it, the problems should be minimal.

I think that only counts if you buy one that way from a stranger.
If it's yours and you know the in and outs of it.
It doesn't matter.

Not the way the guy explained it. If someone were to be injured in accident in it a lawyer could find a way to claim the truck wasn't safe because it was totalled and put back on the road. It might not be a serious problem in your case, but something to think about.

Bummer on the Ranger man. If you start selling parts send me a PM...I'm always looking for something.
What brand fenders are those? How do you like them?
-
Thanks for the info. I may just tube it out and keep it for the dunes but I'm not sure.
I love the fenders, they have held up very well. I can't recall who made them. They aren't glassworks. I'll try to look for a tag the next time I see the truck.

Cool, PM me if you get a chance. That's on my "to do list" somewhere after "make the Tracker run" and "put the lift on the Ranger". :P

If it is totaled they will give it a "salvage title"
if the insurance company says it is a "Total Loss"
This of course depends on what state you are in...
And in some states cars acually must be inspected before that are certified for the streets again....
However as long as you have proper insurance (assuming you are going to use it on the streets)
There should not be an issue...
Salvage Titles Can also be issued for other reason (stolen and found)...so just because you have a "salvage" title dosen't mean you are driving a bucket
-
I had a '86 Chevy Blazer K5 that had a salvage title because the truck was stolen and gone long enough for the owners to be paid for it. It was found a while later and the owners bought the title back, but in Michigan that's considered a salvaged title.
-
Salvage doesn't always mean bad imo. I have seen several vehicles that were not wrecked that badly that were totaled. I think some insurance companies have a rackett going, they total the car, give you very little for it, then sell it off to a body shop for what they paid the person for the car so they aren't out any money.
IF the vehicle is fixed correctly, they will be just as good as a un-wrecked on. But I would only get one I went over throughly, and if I was planning on keeping it and running it into the ground. Salvage title always makes one hard to sell. But if you plan on running it for a really long time you can pick one up cheap. I would look at the work the body shop that fixed it normally does to know how attentive they are to details if that is an option.

A lot of insurance companies will total a car because the cost of the parts and labor is more than you could buy the exact vehicle for to replace it. The most important (IMO) is whether or not the frame was actually damaged. If it wasn't then you should have any issues, per say.

I agree that the frame is probably the most important thing from a functional point of view. However, safety issues, such as proper windshield installation, seat belt anchors, and whatever, are more important from a liability point of view.
