Title: 90 Tracker Recall
Post by: ADavis on January 26, 2006, 12:54:03 PM
Hey all,

Awhile back a piece of the plastic seat belt release button broke off inside the the clip reciever.  This caused me to stop on the trail, cut all the plastic off the reciever and fish out the piece of plastic so my seat belt would latch, but it never worked right since.  Well, in my quest to find a new one I found out that Chevy had a recall on 90 Trackers for this reason.  To make a short story long, Chevy is now replacing my seat belts because of this recall.  I wanted to pass this on because maybe someone else had the same problem and didn't know that Chevy will replace it.

The best part of this whole thing is when I dropped the Tracker off at the dealer and told them that I had a recall on this vehicle.  I wish I had a camara for the looks on there face.  My Tracker has no bumpers, dents all over from rolling it...way too many times, no carpet, and basically it is all torn up.  I love it!  They were in shock.

I just got a letter from GM the other day that read Our records show that your 1991 GMC Tracker Vin # 2CTBJ18 blah, blah has a recall that has never been repaired at a gmc dealership please bring it in so we replace your seat belt buckles at no cost to you

I was like wow it took them 15 years to send me a letter???

Now that is FUNNY!  ;D

Makes me think about looking for recalls on my 'Kick.  Maybe they'll replace the stitching in my stock seats and the cracked windshield.  ;)

How does one check to see if there is a recall. Is there a website that a person can check into it at?

Check this website out:

http://www.carsmart.com/content/own/service/index.cfm/action/recalls?CPCID=22042-40-3833-0-3016-60-0-0&id=22042

I just googled it and I think I originally saw it under Consumer Reports.

hey did you start lookin at the other manufactures and the shit assembly of ford forcus and escape ....did you know that the focus was the number one recall in the world until it became number 2 when ......the escape became number 1

what a piece of shite the fords are hahahahahaha sorry for insulting any one that has one and I hope you never had any of these problems....

I sold these things for a living and I tell you ford canada was like " you say you have had the same problem on your car and it is still a problem and now you have no warranty ? thank you for telling us make your payments or go to court"

it was so hard to get repeat business

I called my local dealer today regarding the recall.   They showed that there was one but said it may not be in effect any more.  He is supposed to call me back after he checks into it.

Well, if they tell you no call the corporate GM office.  I started off calling Corporate to see if it was still in effect.  I pick up my Tracker from the dealer today with new seat belt recievers.  If you like, I will email you the exact Recall number when I get home.  There shouldn't be any problem, my dealer was able to order the parts within a week.

I knew of the recall on my 89, got a letter about it when I bought the truck 10 years ago, but never had the chance to take it in since there are no suzuki dealers within 100 miles and it slipped my mind eventually.  I thought about it awhile back but figured it was over....be interesting to know, my seat belts are annoying at times, but work with the plastic broken, but the plastic that holes them upright is torn and causes them to fall into the tracks when you slide the seats forward to get into the back, it would be great if I could get them replaced!  If the GM one is still good surely the Suzuki one is....

It seems these trucklets were built pretty well.  I have a 92 4dr with a 6" Calmini combo and it appears no recalls

I was impressed at the way GM delt with the recall.  I got it back Friday night and they replaced the whole seatbelt system.  No problems or questions asked.   ;D

I had a seat belt buckle go bad in my Chevy
P/U,  found one from the same year in a wrecking
yard, got it and brought it home, cleaned the
spilled soda and crap off of it, and went to install
it, and the damn thing is different, bigger clip, don't
fit at all   >:(  Same year and all !!

Moral of the story is, different parts used in different
vehicles, or perhaps in different assembly plants thru
the country, as well as other factors like new suppliers
or problems with parts that get replaced with better
ones mid year in production.

My 89' Kick is a Japan built, no recall as far as I know,
but the seat belts still work fine, never had trouble.

I am a Service Advisor for GM Dealer in Anchorage, AK. Been with GM since 1994. If you want to see if any recalls exist on any vehicle that you own, the best thing to do is contact your dealer's service department(advisor or manager), and ask them to check your VIN for campaigns/recalls. This will be a VIN specific search(we have a dealer-only website for up-to-date recall search), whereas the other websites mentioned are generalized, do not account for production dates, etc, or the fact the recall may have already been done. The dealer will perform any recalls needed at no charge to you, we actually get paid to do recalls by the manufacturer, and the service advisor & manager work on commission at most dealerships. $$$

Did you ever stop to think that your kick does have the same seatbelt and Suzuki just didn't bother to fix it for you??? Big company beats little company??

My kick does have a recall because I got a letter about this very issue years ago and never made it to a dealer because there are none remotely close to me.  It is an 89 model though, maybe suzuki fixed thiers by 90, but they did actually recall some of them anyway.
