Title: high idle on a '93 Samurai
Post by: lavigeboy27 on February 07, 2006, 07:39:04 PM
I have a '93 Samurai and for some reason when I start it, it idles high. I tried adjusting the idle screw but that did nothing. Anyone knows what is wrong with it? Thank you.

After your engine warms to temperature what RPM does the motor idle at? Is the idle smooth?

You find a fix for this, let me know.  I'm having the exact same problem.

my 94 1.6 16V  AT kick did the same thing cold or hot in N or P but was normal in D.  previous owner said it had always done that.  have had other engine work done ( T belt and tuneup) and idle is lower and same in all AT positions but still moves up and down a little (2K to 5K RPM) was 15K when idle was high.  shop thinks computer may need replacing?

I finally got it running right. What I did was clean out the throttle body and pretty much everything else that was located around it. I also put new plugs and wires and put some injector cleaner in the gas. Seems to be idling alot lower now.

In my old Sammi ("87) the coolant thermostat was jammed OPEN.  It wouldn't allow the coolant to heat up to operating temperature, so the choke was always at high idle.  New thermostat solved the problem.

Better check your numbers.  I highly doubt the idle was 15,000 (15K) when high. ;D

"Idle" will usually be lower in D with an auto tranny.  Because the torque converter is dragging down the idle, when in D.
What happens when you are on flat, level ground with the tranny in D and your foot OFF the brake?  If the kick will move along at about 1200-1500 RPM without you touching the gas pedal, then your "high idle" is still there in D.

The idle screw defintely should have adjusted the idle.  Are you sure you know where the idle screw is on an EFI samurai?  (it is located under a black rubber plug on the front of the throttle body).
FYI, the idle screw RARELY needs to be adjusted on an EFI samurai.  The comp and sensors should adjust the idle to a normal RPM.
Usually, the high idle problem on an EFI samurai is caused by the "pellet" in the TB becoming worn with age.  The fix is to take the cap off and turn the adjuster to compensate for the pellet wearing down.  I don't know if there is a write up on here showing/explaining how to do this, but there is one on the zuwharrie board.
