Ok, I have a day off, and it is going to turn out to be a bad day for my savings account.. ;)
I have to do this in stages, and has the Zuk bug has bitten me extra hard.. I see that I either have to have TWO Trackicks.. milder on road/offroad and one trail only... or... and I am leaning towards to the "or"....
lol.
I have two 3rd's with 5.62's coming within the next couple of weeks at longest.. the rear has a lockrite. I am now completely convinced I will NOT use the lockrite.. wind up, lash.. noises (I could deal with clicking..I cannot deal with BANG) SO.....
Being that I have been driving it with the 31's as is, and it is doing fine.. I have a mini spool sitting here in my hand..... and I REALLY need crawler gears..
SO... since I am wanting this one to be dual purpose now instead of trail only, I am going to wait till my 5.62's get here and then get ARB's for both ends. I just can't resist... In the meantime, I am going to throw the spool on the rear with the 5.12's.. can do that in an afternoon. And then I can concentrate on getting the TC gears in.
My question is this. I am a very reasonable wheeler, and would not use the front ARB hard in reverse, or beat it, would only lock it in when absolutely needed... I know how to keep things from breaking.. lol...most of the time.. but.. is the stock aluminum front worth putting the money of the ARB into? what are my options.. Grand Vit stuff?? What would I need from the Grand Vit, so I can start looking at the wrecking yards.. Will the ring and pinion from the 5.62's fit the vit 3rd? Does the vit 3rd fit the kick housing? I do NOT want to drop my diff and use the anvil.. wish there were a steel unit for the stock location.
HELP ME SORT OUT THE FRONT.. I know what I want, so it's a matter of time and finding the parts.
Damn, this thing sure took a left turn from a $600 trail beater.... LOL.. the body is going to rust away, leaving me with a tube body buggy.. lol, all the mechanicals are going to be changed too...lol... wonder what will be left of the $600 beater then... damn zuk heads! Your disease is communicable!

You need the diff from a 5spd GV or XL7. Here is the tech writeup
http://www.zukiworld.com/month_090103/feature_sidekickdrivetrainimprovements.htm
The XL7 3rd mounts slightly differently, supposedly it is a stronger mount. I remember seeing that if you can grab the crossmember from the XL7 you can install the 3rd + crossmember without modification.
Do a search with variations of GV, steel, diff, 3rd, and XL7 and you should find some good info. It seems like people were doing this more before the Anvil came out.

This topic reminds me, I found these pics that Yankee Tim had comparing the XL7, GV/Kick, and Sami 3rd members. From the tech article
http://zukiworld.com/month_090103/feature_sidekickdrivetrainimprovements.htm
and other searching I have done it sounds like you can interchange the diff housing and 3rds from and XL7 and GV, but the XL7 3rd looks massive compared to the GV's. Can it really bolt right up?
Just so I don't confuse anybody who finds this post in the future, this is a pic of the rear 3rd members, not the fronts.

WOW, that makes me think...
OK, thanks that link was what I needed to see.. strange I didn't run across that before.. or I may have, when I first bought the track, and went past it as too expensive.. lol... OK.. need to ge read it again!
THANKS!

Want to sell your locker ?
PM Me, my brother needs one
-
PM in a minute...
OK, that all changes things for a little while. I am not sinking all that money into this rusty trail beater at the moment.. I will just keep collecting good parts..
New plan.
Put the mini-spool in the 5.12's
Recieve the 5.62's. Put the front in as is ARB for the rear as soon as funds allow (will be a LOT cheaper buying only one...lol)
Sell the locker out of the 5.62's (wildgoody has dibs)
Sell the 5.12's with mini-spooled rear (should bring good Ebay money)
Use saved money from TWO ARB's.. for a set of crawler gears for the TC.
Groove the center lugs on the LTB's
Call it a dual purpose street/trail beater!
Look for a later model XL7, and build it up!
-
hmmm... I liked it when you were going to sell the 5.12s with the lockrite installed ???
-
Things change... I am thinking out loud anyway...
Don't even have the gears in hand yet. I do know I don't want to use the locker..
How do you lockright guys deal with the clunks and clanks and bangs.. drivline windup, and stuff like that.. I couldn't stand that. Do they not do that in the dirt? I can stand the rear being spooled on the road, more than I could deal with lockright quirkiness... at least that is the way it sounds to me.
I will stop promising parts out.. I will just list everything separately, but at the same time on ebay, so folks can pick and choose whatever they want. I have a bit of stuff getting ready to go on.
sorry.
-
Don't mind me, I'm just razzing you because 5.12 3rd's with a lockrite preinstalled is exactly what I've been looking for.... oh yeah I also need the CV's from a 96-98 1.6L. I can't blame you if you want to make MORE $$$ putting them on eBay. Back on topic....
It seems like people either have no problems with the lockrite and barely notice it after adjusting their driving style a little, or can't stand it at all. I hope it works fine for me, because ARB's are a long way off in the future ;)
So is anyone familiar with using the XL7 3rd instead of the GV one?

Have a look at my post on fitting a LHS driveshaft on the RHS and you should see a picture. It required modifying the existing mount.

Hey, I remember when you got that $600 "Beater". That was a long time ago in dollar years! ;D

That is a sweet looking mod. I will have to remember that when (if) I get a steel housing.

Is that really an XL7 front? I wonder if it is actually the rear. Wheres Mr Bewley he did the XL7 swap didn't he?
Edit: I had a look in the tech archives, it was Zig that did the XL7 third into an Anvil, drop him a PM

Alright, I'm a dumbass. I searched through the yahoo forum where I found the pics and those are the rear 3rd members. I thought I had looked before and couldn't find anymore info, but this morning I did.
