I did a 4.3 to 4.3 swap in an astro van for my dad this past weekend. I went ahead and pulled the old wiring harness off the donor van, and have a complete fuel injection/tranny setup for a 4.3 ready to use in something. I can find 4.3's locally for under $200 all day long...
Now...
My 1.6 is shot in my tracker. It has a rod hanging out the side of the block even. The cheapest one I can find anywhere near my house is $450 w/130k on the odometer. I now wanna install a 4.3. I can fab my own mounts, crossmembers, driveshafts, etc... for a 4.3 swap, and I can use the wiring harness and fuel injection from the van. It's easy to find 700R/4L60's and 350 Turbo's if I ever have a prob with the tranny... (I have had 6 in my '94 camaro, I know they are easy to find). I think I can do the swap perty darn cheap...
The downside, the rest of the drivetrain. I am just gonna do the install, then deal with the breaking points as they come. It might cost me a bit in the long run, but overall I'll have a powerful little ride. :-)
I have done multiple searches on doing a 4.3 swap, but haven't really found anything useful. I remember seeing a link to a site with a 4.3 Votec in a tracker, but can't find it now. Anyone have any good links that might help?

Just a suggestion as far as the rest of the drivetrain goes, if you're looking to keep it IFS, you might want to look into swapping Toyota IFS stuff in.

Yeah, I was considering that since it seems to be the norm here. But, we have (2) S10 4x4 Blazers on our farm... just wasting away. I might try something with them. ;-)

No, don't try that. Stay far far away from lightning conversions.

Yeah, I wanted to use the images on their site to get an idea on how it fits in there. I also wanted to use their product list to see what exactly I haven't anticipated for. I am not certain if I will be required to shift the transfer case back, but it seems likely. I wanted to stick with the 4L60 cause it's included in the wiring harness for the van, it would just be easier to deal with... (no kick down & all computer driven). It is longer than the TH350 and 200R tho... so that almost forces me to move the transfer case. The mounts won't be a problem, and I doubt the crossmember will be much of a deal... but all the misc stuff might be overwhelming. The fuel lines, misc gauges, vaccuum lines, etc. might be a pain if I stick with the TBI and computer setup... but I think I am gonna try it.

two words HACK JOB... I wont ever speek down about another vendor but they are top of the crud list, we have redone 3 trucks from them in 2 yrs. It is hard enough to get samurai guys to open there pocket book but when they throw hard earned cash at cobled fabrication and materials it realy strickes a chord. If any one is looking for particulars on the 4.3 swaps into samurais we would be more then willing to answer questions, with honest answers based on experience.
