First, does the autotranny and transfer case use the same fluid (ATF Dexron III)? If so, how do I change both? Are there any filters and gaskets?
1997 tracker 2 dr 4x4 auto with 90,000 miles...the fluid is low and brownish colored, probably time to service. I want to learn to do it myself!
Thanks for any and all instructions!

the t case will take gear oil not atf. the t case will have a drain plug and fill plug on the back side of the case. i'm not familliar with the auto tranny but just remove the pan to access the filter (fram part #ft1050) and then top it up, let it run and recheck level.

If the fluid is brown, you might think about
a fluid service that takes your old and put's
in new until it's clean
Or install a drain plug into the pan so you don't
have to get ATF in your armpits

You say the t-case takes gear oil and there's a plug...Are all auto tranny's separate from the t-case? I had a Toy landcruiser that used atf in both the tranny and t-case. I thought auto used aft in both.

Yes, T-case on the auto trans still takes gear oil.
I was wondering if I could get some better MPG
with a lighter weight oil in the T-case, but I'm not
game to try straight ATF, I might mix some ATF and
gear for a trial run

the AT in my 94 kick has a drain plug in the bottom. the fluid was brownish too, but shifted good. shop recomennded a drain and fill I could do easy. only about half the fluid drains (about 3 qts) refill and drove. did this a few more times. fluid looks better. An AT rebuilder told me if the fluid goes to long and is burned a complete filter and flush might kill the clutches. THe drain and fill seems to be a good place to start.

I don't really understand why a complete service might kill the clutchs, but I'm game for a drain and fill a few times. Now how many times would you say is sufficient before its good enough to stop? This could get expensive, I think. Also, how do you drain it without removing the pan, if you don't have a drain plug? What about the t-case, should I drain and refill it as well?
