Title: STEERING FEELS WIERD
Post by: truckasaurus44 on February 17, 2006, 05:36:04 AM
I've got the wierdest problem in my 2000 tracker.  As I turn the sttering wheel it hits some spots of higher resistance.  It'll go for like 1/3 of a turn and then get hard for about 5deg, then normal for 1/4 turn, and then tough for another 5-10.  The stiffness is not really predictable and it comes at random intervals.  It doesn't seem to be related to engine speed or driving speed.  Anyone have some sudjestions where I should start looking?

Sounds like a recirculating ball problem,
that's in the steering box BTW.

mine started doing that too. i thought it was just the 180,000 miles that are on the rig ;D
i'll have to check my recirculating ball i guess.

ok, I'm guessing if thats the issue I've got to change out the steering box....or should I say the whole rack.   That really sucks :'(  BTW, what is the recirculating ball?

Whoops, you don't have a box, you are Rack and pinion,
no ball in there, you have an issue with your pump or the
valve body on the R and P unit,, not sure on those, might
not be the unit but a control for steering effort, some of
the newer cars have a thing that boosts the power level
for parking (slow speeds) yet reduces the power at freeway
speeds for better feel. Not sure you have that built in to the
Zuk but I would check it out, along with some recall info.

I replaced the R and P on the wife's car PITA, had to drop the
sub frame, find a used R and P unit, spent hours dicking with
it, to find out the dealer would have done it for free, there was
a recall and they would of done all the work   >:(

Where do I go to check for recalls?  I had a fender bender a while back(No, not my fault) and the strut got bent but the steering seemed ok.  I wonder if this is some delayed result of that smack.

If it hit the wheel,It could be...Beware of rebuild racks,I got one years ago for a T-bird,Had 3 before we got a good one. That's what they where doing....(stiff spots)Make sure if you get one that it has a warranty.

Hey truckasaurus44, did you ever solve this problem?  My 2002 Suzuki Vitara 2.0 started doing the exact same thing today.  I'm going to try replacing the serpentine as step #1.
