You might find that by regearing you can get yourself closer to the stock ratio and maintain all around driveability.

Auto 4 speed or 3 speed ?
If it's a 3 speed some 5.13 gears
would help quite a bit

You need re-gearing! don't fool yourself. I own a shop & we go through this with customers all the time. Every one that ends up getting the re-gear done is  happy. I have a X90 with a automitic trans. & 31" tires too! I've installed a header. Nology wires. Cam & custom intake system. All this added power but without the re-gearing it was a Dog! Just get it geared & save yourself the pain.

the only problem is if he has a standard transmission there are no gearing
options, since Calmini is no longer making gears.
I have a 93kick and  I have the same  problem.

You could search car-parts.com for a set of 88-89 1.3 Carb Kick gears.. they are 5.62...

That's what I have coming.. I paid through the nose...  but I have my stock 5.12's to sell with a locker to offset the price...

The 5.62's will bring a 31" tired vehicle VERY close to stock gearing.. my 31's are about 30.5 actual height.. so 5.66 would be perfect to return to stock gearing...5.62 is pretty darned close...  and that is for a standard.. since the auto has taller gearing, even the 5.12's will help, and they are ALL OVER the wrecking yards..   5.62's would get a nice reduction for an auto with 31's...

Yeah, I have the now-impossible-to-get 5.83's - with 31's, it makes highway driving bearable.  But I'm going up to 33's, so i'm gonna have to pay for that.

Manuals struggle even more because they don't get the torque multiplication effect that the auto gives.
