Title: Sami third in sidekick axle for 5.83
Post by: tsleong on February 21, 2006, 03:23:18 AM
We have heard of sidekick third on sami axle. How about sami third on sidekick axle? The reason for doing this is the option of putting 5.83 gears which seem to be extinct. Anyone done this before? Is it strong enough? I believe the spline on the half shart is the same size and count, just the ring and pinion is smaller.

I thought the low Sammy gear was a
5.38, not much lower than 5.13  :(

I believe Calmini still sell the 5.83. You can buy 2 sidekick front gears and use the second one on  a samurai 3rd.

stock sammy R&ps are 4.67 i think and we are 5:12 . me soon to be 5:83 :-)

i used the kick carrier to save messing around with the spacer.

just another point a kick 3rd wont fit into a sammy casing the crown wheel will hit the casing and the shafts wont line up ,,,  you have to build the insides of the kick into the sammy steel 3rd

I can't see that working, I doubt if anyone has tried it though. The carrier on the Kick is much larger than the one on the Sammi. So I can't see you fitting the Sammi carrier into the Kick casing. The Sammi casing won't bolt up and the R&Ps won't bolt into the Kick carrier either.
I got round this problem by fitting a 10 bolt rear into my axle but that options not listed on Calmini site any more  ??? ???

Just out of curiosity, I called Calmini today and asked if the 5.83 gears are still available for the 10 bolt r+p and they told me " no problem, do you want to order them now?" I thought all the 5.83 gears were gone, but it seems if you have the 10 bolt rear, like i do, you can still get 'em.

Just make sure you asked for a 10 bolt REAR as I was told that they didn't any a while back but of course the front is available.

??? I did make sure to say "rear" 10 bolt,  however I am going to call and ask him to confirm in stock status. You never know with those guys.

http://www.puresuzuki.com/Ring%20&%20Pinion.htm check it out.

How do you tell if you have a ten bolt rear or a 12 bolt rear. without taking it apart????
I've got a 95 tracker 1.6 16 valve, 5 speed 2 door.

I did not mean putting a sammy third into a sidekick axle. What I mean is cutting off the third member housing of the Sidekick and weld in the sammy ones. After that you can use sammy third with 5.83 gears. Another gains from this is extra ground clearence because sammy housing is smaller.

Stock sammy is 3.73.  Auto sidekick is 4.62.

Now it makes a little more sense but that seems like a lot of work and a step backwards.  Sammy owners are stepping up to hybrid axles using sidekick rear center sections to improve strength.  Going the other way around seems like a waste of time for the little extra gearing you get.

ok im interested i looked at the web sight it douse not list a 10 bolt rear and i was told i think in the past when i tried to do the same thing that id have to  put a 12 bolt in the rear because thay didnt make them for the 10 bolt rear. if this is not so post it because im rilley want to change my r&ps for bigger tires and that would save me a lote of money sence the 5.63s are 400 dollers a set and the 5.83 are just under 300 a set. im upset with calmini for not making more r&ps for the rear when thare seems to be a good size demand for them. i wish people would call and voice my opinion to them i have done it. maybe moor of us calling would grees the wheels.

I do know of one person with an early Track/Kick/Vit that had to change from a 10 bolt rear to a 12 bolt rear to install the R&P. I had to do the opposite though. IIRC Calmini use to list both 10 and 12 bolt rears. I have an old catalogue somewhere, if I get a chance I will look it out.
