hello to all, thank goodness hunting season isnt till aug because i think i have turned a bearing i had a knock at about 3500 rpm and during start up, and now it is full blown knock all the time. I just insured it yesterday and was gonna dirty her up today. i am in canada and it is a lwb samurai with the 1300 motor. can i get a good rebuild kit in canada for it or should i swap it out for newer more power? money Is an object so what do you all suggest?

Kidding. You should be able to find a junkyard 1.6L from a Tracker/Sidekick for a few hundred bucks.

the best part of the sammie is that any engine tranny combo will fit in there, since you have a divorced transfercase. if you can find an old hyundai pony 1.6 with the tranny or something similar rear wheel drive, it'll be easy enough to change, providing you have the room. if you can find a little 4cyl diesel benz motor, you'll never be happier

Sorry about the motor crapping-out on you. :P I would definitly make the best of the situation by stepping up to the 1.6 (8v, to keep the budget happiest). That'll help that rare LWB haul itsself a little better! Good luck with whatever you decide & keep us updated.

thanks guys. have been outside trying to figure it out. in my manual it says to pull individual plug wires while running and the noise should diminish when you hit the right cylinder this was not the case and it also said that a water pump on its last legs would make a horrible noise but i took off the belt and fired it up and still the same noise. i took off valve cover to check lash then found out someone has borrowed my tool for measuring gap(the name escapes me right now) but the two front phillips screws holding the valve body down were out and floating around on top! put them back in we still got noise seems to be getting worse. i knew i shouldnt have put new oil in that sucker ha ha. will keep you posted , tune back in to - AS THE SAMMY SUCKS MY OFFSHORE ACCOUNT DRY, : )

This may sound dumb, but your positive the engine is making the noise? On my 88 Samurai the input bearing for the trans is going out and it sounds like a terrible knocking at idle especially. If you push the clutch down, is it still there? Other than that it does sound like a rod bearing.

could it be a head maybe the cam? you can also pull the pan and check the bearings

well i pulled the pan and # 4 rod was spun :'( now i know where i stand. man when they go they go fast. now i willtry to find a 1.6 8 valve . do i need a kit? or does it bolt right up?

the 1.6 swap requires a kit (bell housing plate & mounts and a little wiring) try breeze ind, they're in B.C. somewhere. If not shogun samurai has the kit for sure (Alberta) he's in the members list (SHOGUN)

Im in the same boat as you, but besides the knock on my bottom end, my head has a couple of bad valves. I have very little compression on cylinders 2 (30psi) & 3 (35psi).
I however have decided to build a new 1.3 rather than put a 1.6 in.

ya bud i can relate there is a new 1.6 at the auto wreckers for 1200.00 bones i paid 800.00 for the sammy which is rich for its condition i have put already about another 400 into it and before it gets dirty i blow a bearing my thinking is rebuild bottom end and hope for the best i still have about20 - 30 hours of body work to make it safe.and then there is tires and lifting and winch ect.

I have a slight knocking in my motor, sounds like its coming from underneath, not postive though. How do u know if the rod is "spun"? What do u look for? And could it be the water pump? It doesn't over heat. I just change the oil in it 5w-30, could this be the problem? Any ideas? Oh its a 1.3L with only 70k on it. Chad

I think you guys with Sammy bottom end trouble should be looking at the 1.6/8 Valve, especially if you are in Canada.
Cranks/Rods for the 1.3 are a real bear to find up here and expensive when you do. They are also expensive when you do.
I don't know who quoted 1200.00 for a used 1.6/8 valve but they are nuts...I'm in the business and no one has been able to get that kind of money for them in years.
The 1.6/8 Valve swap can be done on the cheap with the adapter plate and then re-using most of the old Sammy stuff...ie, Intake, Carb, Distributor etc. No it's not as cool as going injected but will work ok and get you most of the Stock 1.6's 80hp (but not quite).
The other major reason to go this route in my opinion is parts availibility. The 1.6 stuff is still reasonably easy to get. Both new and used.
If in doubt give me a PM, I can get new and used stuff.
