hi i'm having difficulty selecting 1st and 2nd gears when engine / gearbox cold as it warms up becomes easier is this common? anyone know which is the best oil to use in gearbox got a 94 1.6 8 valve with 5 speed manual box spanish built vitara rgards alan

Not too unusual. Gear oil should be 80W90 and its pretty thick when its cold.

Actually the shifting mechanism is in a separate compartment on top of the tranny. Changing your tranny fluid wont do anything. You have water in the compartment. You need to pull the console and then the shifter. Then you can get the water out using a syringe or shop vac with a crevice tool. Then blast the inside with wd-40 and stick it all back together...

Also make sure that your clutch is properly adjusted. The cable should have 1mm of play at the clutch fork. I have found that mine is quite sensitive to this.
