Poss. a new kit?
-
and
-
Looks like it's 3-link front and rear - my idea of an ideal SAS setup, very nice.
-
looks good, i'd like to see how the front springs are located on the axle as there on the stock chassis mount? and thats not inline with the axle
-
Not possibly; probably... ;)

See senior ;)

So who is working on that set-up. It is alot like the one I have been working on. Would love to see more pics. Does it perform as good as it looks?
-
Let me guess. Trail Tough with yota axles?
-
Been reeeaaal curious why so many Zuks are using Toy axles. Seems like Birfields are a huge PITA.
-
birfs are not a pain in the ass! You get longfields and problem solved. They can be easily stronger than a dana44 and approaching dana60 strength with all the mods available now and with dana 60's at like $1000 doing up a toyota axle is well worth it. Never mind the weight difference. That looks like a nice kit!
-
:o 550-635 bucks for longfields!
I want to run some bigguns on my Toy (Maybe 37s), but I think I could get ahold of 44 or 60 for that much, not built, but better than my Toy axle.
Is there an old post regarding axle benefits that I can look into? Don't want to flood this post with questions.
BTW, sweet Zuk. I love SAS with coils or coilovers. Shows alot of dedication to me.
-
That's a nice looking set up. Someone has done some homework...or got lucky. That is how I think a set of toy axles under a tracker should look. If the front a-arm mounts were cut off it would look like it came that way.

That is Brent's(Trail Tough)proto-type platform,he's had that for a while now. LQQK for some kool stuff he has for the sidekick coming out.Check out the armor stuff(bumpers, etc) avaliable now. and YES! that is Toy axles with coils. ;) ÂÂ
-
Bummer, I gave up waiting for that kit and sold the axles. :-\
-
i like - do we know when it would be availible?
derek
-
that is freaking gnarly.. I am with feerocknok on this one though.. why toy axles? I can't really back it up since I don't know all that much about is but even with the burfields swapped, that's only the front axle... they don't seem like very beefy axles. I don't know, maybe they are really good.. but I think it would be nice to have fully free floating the the back if you are going to have a serious off roading rig like that.. that way when you snap and axle.. very possible for many to snap any alxe, you can still drive it home... but yea, that kit is freaking badass, if it is a kit that is.. definately the best sas kick I have EVER seen in my life... yea, that thing has wicked skills!
-
Imagine a rockstar with this kit!
-
Take a close look and you will find it is the same set-up as on his rock buggy ( Crustacean ).
Toyota axles are actually a very good option - just about every country in the world has imported and sold the good old Toymotor nail - makes the kit a very universal option ;)
Looks like he is running 33's - Toy axles will handle them easy :)
As we all know - you can buy just about any upgrade for Toy axles too - very clever marketing decision if you ask me :D
This is assuming we are looking at a kit in the first place of course ???
As for fitting one to a "Rockstar" >:( A rockstar would not be a rockstar without IFS - aye Mike H and Stan ;)

I have fallen in love with his front and rear bumpers, and that sas kit looks super too..
They have TC gears on sale again too.. lessee...
$300 for the front locker, carrier set up
$650 for the TC gears
$300 for the rear bumper
$330 for the front bumper
Looks like I need to raise another $1600 for my $600 trail beater... ::) ::) ::) (that sure went out the window!)
Of course then the 31's will be too small...... and I need a cage, and, and, and, and... will this never end????????? LOFL!!! :P

That's what projects are all about! My daily driver was $3500, put 4 grand into it, and another 2 grand is coming for the new engine.
That's what makes truck freaks like us just that. Freaks!
-
LOL, yeah... I had over 10 grand in my Scrambler (Polaris, NOT Jeep...lol) when it was stolen... it was ridiculous.. I would make a GREAT Eccentric millionaire.... but instead, I am just a broke gearhead... :D

well, guess i should chime in on this one.
it is a 3 link with coils, and those are 35's with a little trimming
it has over 36" of articulation and is as stable on the road as a stocker, thanks to the captured springs
anyone that has ever had toyota axels apart will testify to there strength.IMO, with the right birfield they are tougher than D44's and almost as tough as D60's
trail tough is comming out with a bunch of new sidekick stuff, and yes as much as brent hated to use toyota stuff, it is the best decision, because they are bulletproof.
this kit drives like a dream, i liked it 2 years ago when he had it in his shop doing the r&d on the red car you are looking at. the finished product is beautifull.
you all might ask, how does jason know so much?
well at this time that kit and all the accessories are being put on a green 95 kick i hand picked for the occasion. mine will be running 33" tires (i dont want to trim).it will be the production kit, set to be on sale sometime soon.that is why my badass sammy is up 4 sale
i recommend to anyone that has thought of SAS to concider this kit, it is a bad ass setup.

Hummm.......... When will this be avalible........... And (I hate to ask) Will it fit on a Sport??

Thanks for the info, it is a great looking kit. It makes the truck look stock, and much better aproach angles than the choice of leafs ;D

i'm not affiliated with trail tough(they just hold deed to everything i own ;D) so you might just want to keep an eye on their website or give them a call for that info.considering that the platforms are so close (other than length), i would immagine that it could be adapted. i wanted a convertible so it wasnt even discussed. but the idea of a four door for the mrs. has crossed my mind too.

Well.... I tell ya this... I like IFS.... a lot..
BUT... I could really go for that kit.. I would probably just start a new project, as my current one is getting fairly capable already, and jeez... I just spent money on gears, and a lift, and tires, and, and, and, and.. LOL...
I think that one would be good for a 4.3 conversion project... wicked.....

Yes It would ;D ;D ;D,That's why I been asking about toyota transfer case behind a Turbo 350..No u-joint mods, just longer or shorter...easy "bolt in stuff and easy to get parts".I just wonder the cost of the kit???Damn I bet with the 2'' of body lift I could run 33's and jump it!!!

I have to admit, I still have my doubt on Toy axles. I'll have to research it more, but...
This is a gnarly kit. Hope I'll have a chance to see this or similar in person.

I couldnt have said it better myself. ;)

It gets better. Check out the tube frame...OMG I take back my other post about being lucky...They are damn good!!!
-
it's about time someone releases a kit for these things. My choice will be LC 60 series axles. A little wider and i believe more stout than standard pickup diffs. I've been itching for a straight axle for quite a while now, and i've got just the right vehicle for it.
At least it doesn't look very complicated so it may not be super expensive, although they'll be able to set the benchmark ($$$) for how much to sell it for since no one else offers anything similar.
My biggest concern would be what type of gear ratio you'd have to run if using the standard t-case the kick comes with. 31's of 5.12's already seems bad enough and i know most toys are running gears just in the 4.xx range.
-
It is good to see someone bring out a SAS kit for guys who can not build one themselves but to be honest SAS is over rated :P.
And yes I have built one, and yes it has been designed and built correctly with correct geometry - camber, castor, pinion angle, link placement etc etc.
And yes it sits on 37" Wranglers ::) and it peforms VERY well but IFS has some big advantages over SAS and I am going back.
For most of the stuff we do here in NZ I beleive IFS will perform a lot better ;D

Oh yeah - that is 43" of articulation and I put all the road gear on after I had finished the mods ;D

Hello,
I counted just the johnny joints.....16,That would be almost $700...OMG!!!.The reason I've tought about it is swapping in a 4.3 V6 and not braking it when I want to rip on it.

Talk to me.. I am on the fence big time.. I love my IFS, but talk to me about the advantages.. this is the first off road IFS I have wheeled...

This topic should really have its own thread but I will chime in my little piece. I really think IFS and SAS are about presonal preference. I think of it like the automatic and manual transmision debate. There are enough upgrades to build an IFS kick to run as strong an reliable as most any SAS swap you would do to a kick. A store bought SAS and a store bought IFS build are probabally going to be more similar in price than you would think. The upside to an IFS build can be done in stages though.
As for the toy axles brent is using, I think that toy axles are a good choice for the swap. They are cheap, plenteful, and upgradeable. LC 60 series axles may be a better choice, I would bet that you could put the bracket on those axles instead. Im sure brent isnt supplying the axles. The steering may be a little different.

Mike, help me out here a bit.. I KNOW I prefer the ride of IFS, and I really haven't had any problem going places SA folks go.. but I don't (Can't) really rock climb it much.. Help me defend my IFS... My main likes are the Diff being out of harms ways, and having such a nice approach angle with nothing hanging down in front... but coils and SA solves that too..
I just wanted to hear other IFS fans tell me what they like about IFS over SA...
-
Hi Quaddawg,
Sorry I have taken a while getting back to you.
SAS - A well set up SAS front end gives great articulation. SAS is not always stronger than IFS - that is a mith used by SAS freaks who do not know better. Remember that even SAS set ups have weak examples. Birfields - there is a belief that Birfields are weaker than UJ set ups - BULL SHIT >:( We have guys over here running Nissan front ends with 4500lb rigs running 300hp motors with plenty of torque, open and locked ( ARB in or out ) and 35" aggresive tyres ( Simex, Boggers etc ) and the Birfields take all the punishment they recieve. Interesting to note though that the OE Birfields are stronger than any aftermarket offering ???
IFS - These can be built strong - Nissan, Toymotor are good donors for upgrades. My old Nissan 720 had IFS with a welded diff and ran 31's ( big for back then ) and took a pile of abuse and never failed once ;D
IFS Advantages - you can get way more clearance under the cross member than SAS ( when using the same sized tyre ) - really handy when running through deep ruts ( which we do a lot over here ) and the space between the tyres is very clean ( no obstructions hanging down ). SAS set ups tend to "drag" the diff through the mud instead of sitting above it ( ala IFS ). It is always easier to get through something if you stay above the crap instead of trying to push your way through it.
There are heaps more pro's and con's so maybe we should start a new thread and really get people fired up.

rear through most of this thread. I have a sammy and a sidekick. I have been thinking about the calmini IFS lift for my kick. However, I would prefer a SAS swap with yota axles. Is the TT SAS kit a rumor or has it been confirmed, any idea when it will be avaliable?
Thanks.

I am new here to the site. Hello everyone. I have a 1990 tracer and I will be doing a solid axle swap on it. I am using toyota axles for it. This one will be my off road only ride. I have another 1990 that is the same as my first one but it will be my daily driver. I think I am going to use the coil springs front and rear with new link bars. My other option is to run coil overs. I am trying to do this a cheap as possible. I will keep you all posted. Very cool site.
