I have finally got the engine in and sort of tuned, it's ran for maybe 1/2 hour now.
the question is best break-in process ? ( in your opinion/knowledge) ??? ???
I have only done 2 stroke bikes, I usually give them 1/2 hour of babying them and let them go cold, then I give them 1/2 hour of hard riding then let them go cold. This has worked good for me in the past but I realize 2 strokes are very different ( much shorter life span )
I have rebuilt everything witch came with a healthy machine shop bill :'( :'( , so I would like this engine to last 50-60k ( I have a heavy right foot ;D)

For my engine I was told
Drive it up to 50 in third gear several times...
Keep rpms and speed low (less than 50mpg)
Drive this way for around 500 miles and change oil, you can then begin to drive more as usual

drive it normal and dont abuse it for 1000 miles. oil change after 20 minute cam break in, then at 500 miles, then 3000 miles
use a good quality mineral oil, dont use oil additives or synthetic till about 3000 miles

  I use the same break in procedure that Hastings use to put on the side of the box their rings came in.
- Using a good grade of regular oil.
- Warm it up and check everything carefully.
- Take it out on a nice dark street and accelerate 0-100kph as fast as it will go, 5-6 times,
 letting it idle in between. (by the way stay under redline! Watch temps and pressures)
- Take it home re-check everything, change the oil and filter.
Drive it for the next 100,000km
Thats what I've done for years.......take it for what it's worth, I've never had a problem.

did it on an engine I rebuilt, wasn't my
car tho.
The last set of rings, the ones from JP
Pistons says 0-50MPH 5 times, and after
5 cold to full temp cycles, the engine is
broken in, I would change your oil at 300-500
miles, as well as the filter, good regular oil,
no synthetics or additives until 7500 miles

I was always told if you drive it pussy from the start it will always be a pussy motor. Drive it like you are always going to drive it. Of course I didn't just spend all the money to have it rebuilt so I wouldn't listen to me 8).

I saw a test done once using two bikes. One was carefully broken in following the manufacturers instructions and the other was just thrashed straight from the crate. After 500 miles the one thrashed from the crate gave an extra 5% more power. After 1000 milkes they stripped them, the carefully run in motor was like new, the thrashed motor was half way to a rebuild.
I've always treated my engines very gently for the first 500 miles and then gradually increased the load/revs in stages as the mileage increased up to 1000 miles. Most manufacturers seem to specify something along those lines.

Mostly what I have worked on is V8 hot rod type motors, but I am sure that it all works the same. Basically treat it easy for the first 500 miles or so. From a stop run it through the gears up to highway speeds at say half throttle, after that just take it easy for awhile. Also I try to avoid trips that cause the RPM's to stay at the same rate for to long, speed up and slow down alot....basically no long drives with the cruise set for awhile. I normally change the break in oil (dino oil) fairly soon, and then again at 1000 or so just to be safe. Never had one fail on me yet.
