hey, anybody know how much is involved in this swap to a zuki. I heard these things have something like 100hp, do they bolt to tranny or adapter? old intake or GT one? (I wanna stay carbed) What year of GT am I looking for? :)
-
There is one in the Garage Sale area
I think the blocks are the same family,
but the distributor sticks out the back
of the engine, which will hit the firewall
on a Sammy, I have read that you can get
a flat distributor cap, so the wires come
out from the side, giving just enough room
to get the wires on and the cap into place

Why would you wanna be carbed? That engine has a really good fuel injection system... Anyway that's beside the point because it would be very hard to put a carburator on the twin cam engine. One would have to make an intake manifold. Brent from Trail Tough did this swap several years ago in one of his earlier Samurai it was featured on truckworld.com. Pictures from that article may give you some ideas as to what's involved and what the engine looks like. There is also a web site for the Swift GT that has info on the engine itself ssgti.com The engine will bolt directly to the tranny and use the Samurai engine mounts with no modification. The distributor cap will hit the firewall so there's work to be done there and depending on lift you may need to adapt the Samurai oil pan to the GT engine. Wiring in the engine can be done by self or by sending your harness to Trail Tough.
Good Luck, Eric

isn't the engine from a swift a 1.8? Wouldn't it be easier to just find a 1.8 out of a sidekick sport and put it in, due to no distibuter? And they make 120 hp stock.

The older swift gt's area a twin cam 1.3 I think they had different piston rods also to handle the power.

for swift GT info see www.teamswift.net
A couple of guys up here have this swap and they are really high strung engines not good for rock crawling as you need really low gears to keep the engine in its power band. A 1.6 swap would be better in my opinion.
I had a swift GT and they fly but the also weigh 2000lbs!

Oh yeah, the twin cam bottom end is all forged and there is stiffening girdles for the bearing caps. It's a cool LITTLE motor...

I think the 89 Swift GTI has a carb if you want to avoid wiring up the injection system.

Thanks for the tips, let the hunt begin!!!
I wanted to stay carbed to get around the pump or tank mods and less wiring :-[

hey... not to sure if replying to this will work seen as its quite an old topic... what the hell tho eh!
Ive been looking for an engine i could put into my new build... had always wanted to put the swift motor into my old Sami... ended up going for an 8v vitara motor, had all sorts of problems with it.. but when it worked... boy it was good!
someone said that the engine will just bolt in place... no need for any adaptions... appart from the dizzy cap mod... which i have found for sale at www.rhinorays.com might .co.uk... can be bothered to check it..
if anyone else could verify that the engine will just drop in without any welding or the like please do!!
many thanks....

I'm 99% sure the box mates up, I don't have any links that says it does, this link just says that you need the sammy clutch

In our swift GT circle track racer, we took out the GT engine and put in a Samurai block then later a Sidekick 1.6 8-valve block. All of the bracketry between the two 1.3 engines interchanges. Very slight modifications were needed to fit the 1.6 (similar to Samurai 1.6 swaps)

ah thats awsome! hadn't seen that page...
yeah, i know that when we put the 8v 1.6 in the engine mounts were ever so slightly out... so a mate just welded them in place... bit gash.. but it weren't going no where!! lol
well.. i think i should just buy a swift then... want to get the engine side of things sorted before i lift her properly... cos i know i'd never get around to it at a later date!
cheers for all the info guys... great help as usual

Cool, I'm glad I could help. For what it's worth, there is a lot of information in the editorial articles contained in the Archive section of this site. A lot of "ground" has been covered that may help out.

Holy old post batman. I did not even remember that reply I made on page 1. :o
-
No kidding, old post
I did the 1.6 efi swap last year ( works really good ) anyways I talked to a guy yesterday that has the GTI swap in a lwb sami with 33's and gears, he said he uses his clutch like a fuse. He rev's so high for power when mudding he freqently smokes the clutch. Said he can change a clutch on the trail blind folded
don't know about anyone else but I don't keep a spare clutch as part of my trail escentails??
Steve. :)
-
yeah... i'd wondered about using up my clutch... and you say he had 33s?... jeeze... i got a set of 35s waiting to go onto a lwb... so i can see clutches going out the window real quick...
you mention he had "gears"... i'm guessing he had lowered gears? do you know how much lower? i was gonna just go with a 410 transfer box to start with... see how it went like that...
so maybe i'd be better to just stick with the 8v 1.6? which isn't to much hastle anyway...
