Well, if I'm going to go wheeling with any club I need to have recovery points better than stock. I have stock bumpers and planning to install my 3" body lift soon. I can get tow hooks but not sure where and how to mount them as I'm not sure of the good strong areas on these rigs. If you have any pics, or Ideas, let me know.
When I do the body lift I will be striping the bumper cover, is the stock bumber strong enough for tow hooks? If I get stuck I don't want a Jeep to pull off my bumper, or tear the hook out, that could be dangerous.
Yesterday, I had to get my front crossmember fixed, we replaced it with a piece of 3/16" pipe that fit perfectly inside the old pipe, is this an okay spot to put a tow hook or hitch receiver?

I don't think the stock bumpers would hold up.The stock pull points seem very strong.I still have my stock one on the front.But my 8000 lb winch is up there so I can get myself out.I welded a 2"x1/4"thick angle from frame rail to frame rail.Welded 1/8 plate to that.And braced it up from the round tube on the frame in three places all fully welded.So it would have to brake the frame or the bolts that hold the winch on. Then I made a custom Baja style bumper for the front that bolts on with 8 bolts,4 are the stock locations.I have not started on the back bumper....But it's all shaved and tucked up under the body.I lifted the tank 3" for clearance.The pipe inside the old one on the front...I done the same thing on my tank.It was rusted out.The way yours is rusted in the front I don't know if the stock pull point would hold or not....The frames are very thin on these little buggys.

Keep us posted as to what you figure out.. I am facing this very soon myself, and will probably be redoing my front crossmember similarly to this.
I think I might get Trail Tough's new front bumper, or have one made similar to that. I just don't have the equipment to get it right... boo hoo... ÂÂ
I was thinking that if I couldn't swing the new bumper this month, I might try to weld tabs for shackles off the front of the frame.. but I have to take it all apart to see where..

how do aftermarket bumpers atach to a kick? I see hooks on some of them, plus some are designed to hold a heavy winch, and that's pulling on the vehicle. I don't trust the stock one either, it's a little seedy, but putting the new pipe through, and it is the full length seems very strong, but I'm nut sure if snaching from it will bend something, as the front a-arms are atached.
My cross member has been broke for a while, but I noticed yesterday as I turned the wheel the lower a arm mount would move inward, it was scary :o

Hope I remember the story right:
A kid I know tried using his stock rear point. Snapped like a Zuk axle.
Next, he went for the crossmember (plastic bumper cover removed), and bent the sh*t out of it.
I'd recommend (for the rear) beefing up the rear crossmember and throwing a heavy ass hook on, cutting a hole in the plastic cover for it to fit through.
If you don't want to cut a new hole, run it where the old one was, but reinforce the member. Nobody likes a bent member.

So I take it that this spot can only be seen when the bumper and or cover is off. I changed the oil tonight, and was not finding any good places to hook to. I hav not had time for this board in the last few weeks :'(

We have a batch of puppies, plus a 13 week old pup that needs attention also. Busy Busy Busy.

I can see that part - I have the bottom part of my bumper trimmed off, that's what I'm looking for, thanks. I'm assuming they are strong enough - I'm worried about something like that pulling away and becoming a projectile. Did your stock hook pull off, or did you remove it?

Could I just wrap a strap around that front x-member tube that I fixed? Or would that be a bad idea...
I've been doing a bit of reading on snatch straps and recovery straps, there's more to it than I thought - one thing they mention is what you're putting the strap to, it needs to be solid, and have a higher breaking point than the strap.

I removed the stock U thing, it was
in the way, and looked like it could
hang me up if I used all my approach
angle, another reason I used these
is that they lay flat against the frame

Sweet...If you guys would stop posting stuff like this I might be able to get mine completed...or at least drive it some.I love those!!! I looked at those hooks at Tractor Supply they are like $8 with 11,000 lb rating.Guess I need 4 of them now that I know what to do with them...Frt and Rear.I'm going to make 1/4 plates the size of the frame so they hold on tight!!!

this is what i did - welded thick washers to the frame and then ran a grade 8 bolt thru - don't know how strong it is, i have not had to use it yet.
