Title: Adjusting Valves on 1.6L 16V

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing that the valves on the kick seem to be a bit more noisy lately.   I'm curious whether or not a valve job is in order.   To my knowledge they haven't been adjusted since I bought this rig with 85k on it.   It now has 134k.   

Does anyone have an informative guide on adjusting the valves...tollerances, order, etc....

I'd rather not burn up a valve(s) because of lack of proper adjustment....It seems the zuk is running a little weaker as well, so I'm curious as to whether the valves are a possible cause....

Adjusting insn't too hard, but getting to them
on a 16V can be fun, you got to remove the air
intake tube, and the throttle linkage, then use
the adjusting #s under the hood, I think it's
.007 intake and .008 exhaust, if not it's .006
and .007 , and to make the job easier get a bent
tip set of feeler guages, you will also need a 12mm
wrench and a flat tip screw driver, don't over tighten
the jam nut, it doesn't need to be cranked on tight.

Loose valves retard valve timing, but tight valves
burn the exhaust and intakes on occasions, be carefull

If this thing is on it's last leg, I may need to pick your brain about fitting a turbo on a rebuilt 1600... ;D

You're suppose to do this on a warm motor right?

I do mine cold.  Easier to ensure the engine stays a constant "cold" temp than a constant "hot" temp.

No.  Feeler gauges, wrench and screwdriver.

Special tools only needed for replacing the valve guide seals. The FSM reccomends checking and/or readjusting the valve clearance every 15k. Loose is always safer than tigh, but it could mean your valves are hammering their seats if their real loose.
