Title: Best way to bolt on home made bumper?
Post by: Jimiweld on March 23, 2006, 07:25:59 PM
Just wondering what others have done in the past for bolting on home made bumpers. The 4 little bolts that hold the original front bumper on aren't strong enough for any pulling.
How do the aftermarket bumpers fit on?
I don't want to put the stock bumper back on so I think I'll make something. Do you drill through the frame and sleeve it with tube and then run larger bolts all the way through?
Thanks
Jim

WHat I did was drill a 1" access hole in the front of the frame so that I could then drill much bigger 1/2" bolt holes and snake the nuts in through the access hole. Once the bumper was securely bolted, I covered the access holes with a rubber plug. I also used heavy duty 2" muffler clamps around the forward tubular crossmember and welded on pipe from the saddle up to the underside of my winch plate. I also tied the custom made skidplate into the back of the bumper, the front lower A-arm bolts and the crossmember just behind the engine... Definately very strong! LOL!

I think a mount that works it's way into
the front body mount would be very strong,
the 4 stock 8mm bolts could be used for holding
the bumper on while you get the big body bolts
installed.

Hello,

I took some pics for you,I used the stock ones, made a winch mount which is welded to the frame. There are two bolts that hold the winch fairlead and bumper, and two mounts that I drilled and tapped on the sides. So that's 8 total bolts holding mine on.

Yes, That's it and it works great...Had it locked in 4 low with the E-brake pulled and It will drag it just like the Tracker was not even there..And that was up hill :o..Dad said that I could run over trees(bumper)...If not just winch up them.... ;D

I was thinking about getting some of those covers, to protect from rock damage.....  Plus it would match my front end...

I welded some pieces of angle to the front of the boxes and drilled more mounting holes thru the angle and bumper mount.

Thanks for the ideas for fixing the front bumper to the frame. Until I get a winch to build my front bumper around I think I will use a piece of 4" c-channel and attach it per the comments here.
Thanks
