4.32?

The 3-speed automatics in 2-doors were 4.625 at least up to 1996.  The 4-speeds (found in 4 doors) were 5.12 -- correct me if I am wrong, guys.

The best place for finding them is in the salvage yard.  You'll find quite a few laying about missing the engine but with the front axle assembly. I scored a front 4.625 locally (housing, CV shafts and third member) for 200 bucks.   Getting the gears only will probably cost you more what with the cost of tearing down the axle assembly.

Rears are bigger than fronts and require a remanufactured hybrid axle for use in a Samurai.

The side gear spline count are not the same in some complicated way (Samurai front to rear, TracKick front to Samurai front?), so you can't just slap the aluminum third from a TracKick onto a Samurai.

Aluminum thirds break more often on the trail than steel ones, so you'll want to consider rebuilding your samurai thirds while installing the 4.625 (or whatever) Rings and Pinions.

I am in the middle of doing this swap with two front 4.625s on my Samurai and should have an article on the project online somewhere before the end of June.  maybe even here! (Hey EB, ya interested?)

What I have in my notes is:

4.30X:1    Non overdrive 2 dr auto 1.6L 16v  (not sure what years these were made)

Also the newer MT vehicles have the 4.30 ratio

4.30X:1  Grand  manual  (XL-7 manual)  (99-2003)
And if you happen to get the whole STEEL axle housing and 3rd member I'll take those and you keep the R&P's

We THINK that my '96 has the 4.30 gears...which will be replaced with 5.12's in the not to distant future.  I will be loosing the 3rds at that point.  If you're interested let me know. :P

If that is a 4spd auto it might already have the 5.12's

It's a 3 speed non-OD auto.  The 2 doors didn't get the 4-speed OD auto trans until the body redesign if I remember correctly.

kymike, clean out your PM box, I got your PM but I can't write you back because your PM box is full!
