Title: Front end PROBLEM
Post by: texrok on March 26, 2006, 05:35:36 AM
OK here is my dilema.  I noticed a while back that when I put my 95 tracker in 4wd that the passenger side wheel seemed to rattle and vibrate, but it only did it in 4WD.  So yesterday I had a little time and tore into the front end.  Here is what I found:

The manual locking hub cab was broken (but still working). :o
There was no grease for the axle shaft running through the steering knuckle. :o
AND there was a strange brass type bushing that was almost desentigrated. ???

Does anybody know anything about the brass bushing.  There did not appear to be any damage to the knuckle or the axle shaft except for the seals.

Anyway, can I get away with just replacing the brass bushing and seals or do I have deeper problems I am not seeing.  And what is the bushing called?  I figure replacing the locking cap is a no brainer.

Sorry I did not take any pictures.  I know I should have.

Any help would be great.  Thanks guys.

was this bushing visable from the outside of the hub or the backside? a picture would really help. does the axel have any up/down play when it is in the hub - ie wheel bearing possibly and how does the bearings feel when you turn the hub?

derek

The wheel bearings are smooth and in good shape.  The bushing is located on the back side of the steering knuckle and appears to act as an idler bushing maybe.  And yes there was a lot of slop in the axle shaft where it comes through the hub.  I have a Chilton's manual but it doesn't explain crap. ::)

Pull the axle out, see if it's all buggered up,
or if not, just replace the bushing, BTW I have
a spare or two if you need one, or hit your local
wrecking yard, you can find it there too.

Thanks Wild.  Is there a part number on the bushing?  I think the only thing I need to replace is the bushing and the seals.  Everything else looks OK.

Would Auto Zone carry these bushings?

Autozone   ...... AHAHAHAH   Good one
No, I don't think so, I bet the dealer will
have a hard time getting it, used or Hawks
or something like that.

I have spares from the Full Floater Project
I have in the works
