Title: Transmission upgrade for Sidekick 1995
Post by: sharnyo on February 20, 2005, 01:33:20 PM
Hi,

I have a Sidekick 1995 with manual transmission. Does anyone know whether it's possible to upgrade it to an automatic transmission ?

Any pointer is much appreciated.

Thanks.

In addition to the transmission, you're going to need the center console and shifter, and a new ECM.

A lot of us wouldn't consider that an upgrade at all - but if you survey everybody here, you'll probably find that we're split 50-50 between auto and manual units.

I have an automatic and I want a manual tranny! Automatics suck especially when off roading.  :'(

Looks like it's more complicated that I thought

The reason I had that thought is that the car is now mostly used in the city with traffic jams. An auto would be much more desirable. Though it's an old car, it is still in a very good condition.

Thanks for all of the inputs.

Changed the Landcruiser from a turbo 350 AT to an SM465 MT..................Works much better offroad

AND

Changed the Buggy with a 2.5L Zuk motor from an MT to a Powerglide....................works much better offroad

i swaped from a mt to an auto i love it  especially for off roading. there are some changes in converting though.but it is worth it especially if you dont like changing your preasure plate and throw out bearing all the time, like all the oughter mt owners. :)         i even have a spare auto with  t case im looking to get ride of for a price ::)

I saw Wild's auto in action in Moab last year.  Seemed to do a great job.  (The torque converter is like instant crawler gears, no clutch burning)

Getting an auto tranny was one of the main reasons for me getting a kick.  There is no better setup offroad than an aoutomatic with fuel injection.  If you want a manual for lower gears why not just get the lower gears ???  If you're worried about being able to stab the clutch when in trouble, just wheel with one hand on the shifter in hairy spots.  I will never wheel a stick again

You couldn't pay me to wheel a stick I love my auto ;D

as far as I know the 3 speed auto is an easy conversion as  the trans isn't computer controled. The stock gears in the axles for the auto's are 4.30's or 4.62's depending on the truck if you use the auto with your manual's 5.12's you'll gain some gearing for larger tyres as well ;D

The three speed is a good idea.  The tranny (or computer) doesn't allow the use of overdrive in low range, and on the road I didn't need it.  Granted I was on 35" boggers, but they do run short.
