Title: 1.6 Worth while?
Post by: esam on February 17, 2005, 01:42:05 PM
I am looking to get some more horsepower for my samurai and am trying to weigh all of the power upgrade options out there and keep getting drawn back to the 1.6 conversions.  Is it worth the time or should I be looking at some of the new 2.0 liter kits.  I just bought a 92 sidekick with a blown head gasket for $500 but, I think I can double my money because I already have a guy that says he will give me $1000 as is.  I know that this is only an 8v and that the 1.6 is worth it or so many people wouldn't be doing it.  If I do go with the 1.6 conv. which kit is best.  Just wanting to make the best informed decision I can.  Obviously, just a newbie.

I love the 1.6. I prefer the 16 valve. more power and more durable.

My 2 cents

Been running an 8v for a few years and I have no complaints. It is head and shoulders above the stock 1.3. The 8v makes just as much torque in the lower RPMs as the 16v does. The 16v really shines at higher rpms though ;)

What is the best to get the fuel to the 1.6 8v?  Do you use the stock EFI or carb (aftermarket?).

Which adaptor kit should I use?  Seems as though Petroworks takes into account for the usually necessary 1" body lift in their motor mounts.  Anyone used this kit before?  What about wiring?

You can get around lifting the body with a few minor mods to the throttle mounting and the air intake. The wiring you can do it yourself if your up to it but be prepared it is a challenge if you don't know what you're getting into. You'll need the Sami Serv Man. and the Donor vehicle Serv Man.  Trailtough has a wiring kit that costs a few bucks and eliminates the donor harness I think. I got my Eng. Swap Kit from Shogun in Calgary Alberta, seemed to line everything up pretty good. I don't know what the other kits are like.

i would keep with the kick and sell the sami alot more options. is it a 4 door if it is they will climb better more room for gear not so tipsy. my opinion
i have a 4 door well started a 2 door didnt like the soft top. so i traded it for a 4 door. swaped every thing. found out a couple of weeks later that they dont like 60 mph turns on dirt with a missing lug nut. rooled it. found anoghterbody for 100$ swap again. this time manual to auto plus dash and wiring harness. want pics. go to granitepath.com under kevin and adri. ;)

I'd like to swap in a 1.6L 8v to my Samurai, I found a 1989 Sidekick in the junkyard but found out that some Sidekicks came with EFI 1.3's also, how can you tell a 1.3 from a 1.6 in the junkyard environment? My plan is to swap on the manifold, carb, and header that I have.
Any help in determining how to buy the right thing the first time is appreciated.

If you find a 1.3 Trackick in a jukyard, GRAB IT! It's got the 5.63 gearsets in it, very desirable!

The 1.3s that are in very few of the 89 sidekicks are all carbed.  None were ever EFI.  Pretty easy to tell the difference between a carb and EFI.  But if you still can't figure it out, look at the flange on the backside of the engine....on the drivers side there is an engine displacement stamp there.....it will be either 1590 (for a 1.6), or 1324 (for 1.3).  Or you could also look at the sticker on the underside of the hood...it should say either "1.3" or "1.6".
