Title: troubleshooting 95 4dr, 16v no start problem
Post by: jeffry on March 30, 2006, 07:57:21 PM
Hey all,

I've got a dead 95 4-door, 16v that no longer starts. A brief history first: it is my mother's old car, she began having some power issues, her mechanic said engine problems, get a new car. I brought it to my house, limping. Couldn't accelerate, didn't have much power - but no bad noises from the engine. I put it up on ramps in my driveway by accelerating as hard as I could to get up the ramps, then it died and hasn't started since.

Things I've done so far:

ECM rebuilt, just in case.

Checked fuel, it's getting plenty.

Spark seems good, rotor turns so I'm thinking the timing belt didn't break (could it have jumped a few teeth?)

Next on the agenda is a compressiion test to make sure it isn't something bad in the engine. Again, there is no noise like a thrown rod or anything, which is why I'm thinking it isn't a bad internal thing - unless that part broke and quit making noise before I drove it to my house.

So, just want to get an idea from the collective wisdom as to how to proceed. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

How did you assure that it's getting fuel? Have you checked the spark? Make sure you have both fuel and spark first, then report back.

I assume it is cranking over?  Definitely check the timing no matter what.

it can only be one of three things:  mechanical, electrical, or fuel.  it sounds like it must be electrical.  May be as simple as distributer cap-wires, etc.
