Title: Turbos
Post by: bentparts on March 31, 2006, 05:03:26 AM
Got a question For Wildgoody. I would love to increase the power on my 95 16v Tracker, but don't want to go thru the hassle of a engine swap. Have done all the common stuff, exhaust with header, airfilter, and such. I know you have built  a turbo set up and have worked out the bugs and problems. I am a pretty fair mechanic, not so good a welder, and don't have a tubing bender. Just exactly what parts would I need to turbo my Tracker? Is there anyone out there making a reliable and well built kit? Or would you be interested in putting together a kit I could install, for a fair fee of course. I'm pretty good at following instructions ( military training.) I'm also pretty good at making and spending (ha ha)  money and am willing to pay a good price for a good kit. Bear in mind I live on the east coast. Pm me if you have any ideas or suggestions. Thanks, Mike

Yeah, my wife took a bunch, but I'm such a tecno weenie I could'nt figure out how to post em. When she gets home I'll have her transfer some and maybe she'll be kind enough to help me post a couple.

I'm actually really interested in this too.  I have a 2003 Tracker with a 2.0l and would really love some more get up and go.  I would love to have some information on this and maybe pointed in the right direction.

I have kicked around the idea of building turbo
kits, but I didn't think the price would sit too well
with the Track/Kick crowd, we tend  to not spend
big $$ like Honda and Jeep guys do, Ford and Chev
for that matter.

So I was going to offer the headers and intercoolers
and related parts, but ya, I could set up a total kit.

I'm not comfortable trying to setup kits for an 8V engine,
there is just too much fabrication as well as extra fuel
that is needed, along with an extra EFI computer, but
16V is a different story, all the right equipment is there,
and adding a turbo intercooler and some oversized injectors
is not such a big deal.

I'm in process right now of building the
prototype all stainless 16V header, I have
everything I need now, and will be working
on it this week before Moab.

Intercoolers will be dependent on the lift
and mods you have, big intercoolers can
be fitted if you have a 3" body lift, or smaller
ones can be fitted with some holes drilled in
the sheet metal around to the front side of
the radiator.

Turbos can be bought new or rebuilt, I would
recomend one from a 1600 to 1800 cc engine,
smaller is better for lower revs, bigger is for
Ricers, remember that, drivability on and off
road is a big factor.

Swap out the stock injectors for some 25 PPH
units, they come on EFI 2.3L Fords (non turbo)
I'm sure there are others too but Fords are common

I would also add a mixture meter and a boost guage,
good to keep track of what's going on under the hood,
you will also need to retard the timing about 4-5* or until
the ping stops, you should also run premium unleaded.

Headers are going to be about $450, intercoolers are
going to be in the large size only (you need a body lift)
or find one at a wrecking yard for smaller sizes, Nissans
and Mazdas are the ones that come to mind.

Big intercoolers are about $250, and are custom sized
for the front of a Track/Kick, you can see a similar style
one on the webpage

I don't know how useful this will be for you US guys but I have an Excel speadsheet giving details of a lot of Bosch injectors. Its rather buried on my EFI site but it can be accessed here:

Thanks jimmyn

Need to check a few things,
1st what is the Ohm reading on the stock Suzuki
injectors, and then the Ohm reading on the 2.5L
Ford injectors, if similar then they will not need
resistor packs.

2nd  Are the Ford injectors the same height as
the Suzuki injectors? if they are and the O-rings
are teh same size, they should work, assuming the
PPH flow rate is about 25 PPH

Get the #s from your Ford injectors, and then check
them from Rhinomans site and see what they rate at

An 8 Valve would be better be to Turbo, Dues towards it has lower compression, and will be able to hold more boost, on a stock block, but the 16 valve will have better,IM, TB,MPFI, and fuel rail,FPR,Injectors and ecu,

Anyone with some welding skills, and knows how to operate tools, and air tools, can turbo anything, Carb'd motors are a lil more harder, but can be done,

If you were to turbo a 16 valve, or a 2.0 i would recommend replacing the timming belt, water pump, oil pick up, and Headgasket, and a spare oil pan wouldnt hurt incase you screw up the stock one will tapping it..Most zuki parts should be interchage-able

Back Before i got into Zuki's,When i was Younger I had a 96 civic HB, with a B20B (Dohc) 2.0 With a homemade turbo kit, that was put together and installed for under 1K, which included 2 hours of free tuning on a buddy's mustang dyno. I ran Just under 1 Bar, 14.3lbs on the street, But 93 octane was a must, And home depot for the MBC,

Go Ahead and Check out my buddy's site for Techincal resources are idea's

Best of luck
