Title: So has anyone fit 32's?
Post by: 2K1USGV on April 01, 2006, 10:19:25 PM
So I finished my 4" or so lift and I'm currently running 235/75/15's. I now have room for a 32" tire after the lift and some slight body modifications. My question is if anyone here has run this size of tire? I know that nomad was going to try on his xl7 but don't know if that ever came to fruition.

The lift simply places the wheels below the wheel well, allowing for the larger diameter. If the wheel were to compress back up into the wheel well during wheeling (articulation of the axle) then the wheel will most likely rub on the fender wells. It won't be a problem if it's a pavement pounder, but you could have issues off road. You might be able to make them fit with some inner fender well modification. (such as pulling the plastic liner farther away fron the tire)

Well that is what I have done. I have cut some of the inner plastic fender, where you can't really see it and also cut and pounded the metal fender against the firewall in the front to give a geed emount of extra clearance. So I think I should be set :) We'll see, I should have the 32" or 265/75/16's on later today.

I know I saw someone running 32's on a GV here the link

From the looks of this guys GV you may need to do some more trimming  ::)

Thanks BK, that's good to see. I've trimmed off enough in the front, but I might have to do a little additional trimming in the rear.

i'll be very interested in the details of the trimming required.  i'm gonna do the 2in RR body lift next, not sure when, no rush at this point as it seems like a lot of money and work to allow me to run 31's (a whole extra inch above my 30's...) and not have to trim anything metal.  i'm willing to trim/clean up the inside of the fenders if required for 32's but not so much outside..  thanks - b

32's have fun with the BFH banging shit. all the fender flares come off lol.

Well I went and had a 32" Mud Tire fitted and it fit just fine as far as clearances go except for the frame. Even with my 1.5" spacers on the wheels I'm still touching the frame by the firewall. I thin if I get some better ofset wheels I can run them but it will be very tight and I could not flex the suspension very much. Looks like we're stuck with 31". Damn the 32's looked sooooooooooooooooooooo good under my GV.

Offset wheels will clear the frame but when u turn the wheel the outside of the tire will rub the fender flares and wheel wells.

So with the 31's how did it fit and all?

What lift u have?

No, no pics with the 32's as of yet. I'm still riding on the 235/75/16's. I'm going to another tire place around noon today, will try to fit a 32 with a slightly different tread pattern. I'll try to take pics of the test fit so you can see where it rubs.

who's tires did you try.  You might look at some place like tirerack on their spec page and check out the man. over all diameter listing.

Well the tires I tried were Kumho Road Venture MT. They have an awesome looking tread and great reviews. I was getting 4 for ~$600 installed. I'll post a pic of the lift with the current 235/75/16's later today as well. The lift is one I made from UHMW plastic.

Oh yeah thats right forgot about that. What struts u using?
Title: Re: So has anyone fit 32's?

I have the BDS Strut extenders that screw on top of hte strut and extends is about 2". Works really well since I don't have to modify the strut bar mounting location. But I will be going with OME struts in a month or so.

Yeah im not a big fan of those strut extenders buddy had them on his tracker and the thing snapped and caused alot of damage.

Im gonne be doing the RR Body lift soon

They are actually very heavy duty extender, I don't see these things snapping any time soon.

I got them for $36 a pair. Verygood quality, and like I said, they allow you to use your strut bar without modification.

SO due to everyone apparently getting their studs taken off today the tire shop was about 2 hour wait time so I decided to try the 32's on tomorrow. This is a pic I took the the GV as it is now with the 235/75/16's and about a 4" lift:

Here is the modified firewall side without the flare on. I had to cut some of the flair, I'll post that later when I get everything cleaned up"

I had to grind down the wheel well a little more so it wouldn't rub but it's all good now.

Nice.  So how's it move with those big tires?

Going to do something about the rear?  Looks pretty close to the rear of the wheel well.  My wife's is about as bad with the stock suspension and large 225/75R15's wedged on. 8)
Title: Re: So has anyone fit 32's?
Post by: 2K1USGV on April 06, 2006, 05:09:36 PM
I was actually surprised as to how well it copes with the larger tires. I can accelerate pretty much just as fast as with the 235/75/16's I had on there before. I trimmed the rear up a little so now no problems as all. There is more than enought excess material in the rear to trim to fit these, you won't be able to stuff them into the fender though that's for sure. I see mostly sand or snow, no rock crawling or anything so this is just fine for me.

Sounds good to me.  My plans are JDMCRX's lift and the tires we have now.  At some point the body clading will likely come off and Rhino Liner will go in it's place.  Rust/ding proof and the wife doesn't like the clading's color anyways. ;D

those tires are looking pretty phat on your gv, so, those are 32's pretty much?  can you articulate at all with those on as it sits or is that back bumper/fender coming off?!  do they fully clear the rear of the front fender now when turning with the current trimming?

just curious, how are the wider/bigger tires fitting as far as rub? I have the RRO 2-inch body lift and OME springs with 1.5-inch spacers and 235/70/16 tires. Plenty of room in the wheel well, but I rub at full lock and when fully compressed in the rear.

It seems like a tire wider than 235 would reduce turning radius, and rub a lot more ... (one possible change is I have a Vitara, not GV. Since the track is an inch or two narrower, I'm wondering if that is done through tire tire backspacing).

Look great with the beefier tires btw.

Jeff

You also have to realize that I have 1.5"  wheel spacers on all the wheels that's what prevent's rub at full lock. I have since changed to 245/75/16's because going over any terrain at certain angles I would rub the firewall. So I decided that to keep the vehicles functionality, I would go with something just a tad smaller so I got 31's.

Yes they are 31's. I had to downsize, the 32" would ocassionally rub when turning which didn't bother me but when I wen't off road it got worse and that did. Since I shaved everything clear to the firewall in the front I didn't want the tires to start rubbing the firewall so I went with the 31's

How is the power loss and mpg loss with the 31's. Gas is already over 3 bucks a gallon and I cant afford a big loss in milage.
Title: Re: So has anyone fit 32's?
Post by: 2K1USGV on April 26, 2006, 08:22:43 AM
Well I didin't really see a loss in gas mileage. I mean I don't get as much miles per tank on the Odometer but than calculating that there is a 12.4% difference. SO I get about 220 miles per tank city driving.  That's give me about 250 miles per tank city driving and that's just what I got befor eswapping tires.
