yes it can be done. i was thinking about doing it to my 86.
the best donor would be a toyota 4x4 pickup  with 22r, and  5speed.
use the entire running gear! the toyota trans and transfer case are not divorced like the samurai.  the 22r is a little longer than the 1.3 sammi. the radiator will likely have to be mounted forward just behind the grill.  instead of hacking up the floorpan on the samurai for the new shifter locations , cut some of the toyota floorpan out and weld it into the samurai.
i saw one of these done like this and  it was a clean deal. it just takes time and $$$$$$$$$$$$. :)

With a little ingenuity, you can stuff anything between the frame rails.
I shoe horned a small block chevy and a Turbo 350 tranny in my '88 Mazda B2200.
Keep in mind things like room for exhaust, upgrading cooling system, and definity the wiring.
All can really add up $$$$. but the results are worth it.
