here is a link to the home page. http://www.globalsuzuki.com/automobile/jimny/index.html
solid axles front and rear and it comes in a soft top.
-
I don't think they are in Mexico or Canada.. at least to my knowledge.. but I am right there with you man, I love those little trucks..
Maybe a serviceman overseas could find some way to bring one back? Doubt it though.. couldn't get it licensed... probably couldn't get one imported
-
I'm with Quaddawg, I don't think any of these were ever imported to the North America areas. The easiest way would probably be to import it to Canada, then import it to the US. Probably cost more then the rig though. ;D
-
it seems to be the last non retarted zuk since the news about the new crappy xl 7, they should sell them here so we have a non-yuppie zuk left
-
Sure you could get it licensed with a OHV sticker. Or maybe in Arizona, just say it's a kit car ;)
-
if they were in canada i'd already have one lifted. ;D
i think you can get them in south america though. in bc canada atleast we can't import a vehicle from another country until fifteen years has past from the model year. i already looked into importing one :'(
-

Hahaha! Me too!
-
I have seen some killer looking lifted ones from Japan and England. At least I think there in England. I think we would have this car if it was not for Consumer Reports.
-
Austraila and Japan is where youll find most of them!! :D
Just cant figure out why they aint here in Canada.
BULL SHIT IF YA ASK ME!!

a 1,5L Diesel is available in Germany

get one in Holland, import it in "parts"
add 3" body-lift and the 4" suspension lift+++
mabye put toyota axles on it (the jimny has a little weak front axle) +a tuned baleno engine
-isn't that a kit-kar?
i should not see this video anymore, i REALLY like that 32"weels Jimny
-
Beerman:
Do not forget the weak as piss gearbox , and useless transfer case >:( - these trucks require everything but the engine and rear end replaced to be any good - trust me, I know ::). We have one over here running 33" Wranglers and it has been slowly blowing itself to bits - bit by bit :o

The Jimny was kind of the continuation of the Samurai, theyve always been called Jimnys in Japan...... WHy the hell Jimny, I dunno. If Samurais never left the market, thats what they would look like. That video is nuts, It looks modified, but not super modifed and it went through all that shit! Id love to have one too, they look like Mini Hummer H2s....... but arent for grocery getting and rap videos.
-
How does the drivetrain compare with the sidekick?
-
they are easy to find in sweden and i was planning on getting one, but for 2,5 times the price of my vitara i dont think they are that good, allso they have vacum operated front hubs and i hear thats a week spot. And the kick has more power to :)
look here  http://www.jimny.se/

I still like Sidekicks

I forgot about that rule. You see people importing some of the early 90 Japanese tuner cars now through canada because the 15 years are up.
-
My ex-gf has a Jimny, still stock but has done some mild off-roading. the engine has the same bhp as my 8V Vitara 80bhp. The Vit makes its power lower though. Last summer we did a 9 hour drive to Scotland (we went the pretty way, lol). I certainly can't imagine doing that in a sammy, especially as I had a bad back at the time!
-
They have them in Costa Rica, I rented one for a week with the gf, had 205/70 street tires, otherwise it did all right on the rough stuff....
Here we are way up in the mountains...
-
I wouldn't mind a jimny one bit
-
Hi there,

Didn't someone say they're actually smaller than a Sami?
I know the Sami as we (North America) had it continued on overseas for several years with a coil spring suspension as well. Looked mostly the same just with a better suspension that we never got. :(
I know around 99-01 when I was talking to guys in New Zealand a lot there was one guy with a pair of tricked out Samurais, one had leaves and the other had coils. From what he said I gathered that the Jimny was a totally different beastie.
-
They sell them in Costa Rica. Just buy one down there and have it shipped back to the us or canada. (it would probably be easier to ship it to canada and then drive it down into the us(so the us customs bastards cant say it is a terrorist weapon ;))
-
You could probably never register it as it won't have a US or Canadian title.
-
You could probably never register it as it won't have a US or Canadian title.
these are the things that make me despise the us government. they think they know more about cars than they actually do. Common sense says that the Jimny is no worse polluting than any thing else on the roads in the US and would pass the smog tests, but the us government, and their best friend consumer reports says that the jimny is a bad car, with no reasoning or even seeing or knowing what it is, and that it cant come across our borders and be registered, just because they assume it is not as good as the cars here, when in all other areas of the world, the car is welcomed and very liked. stupid political people stuff ::) ::) ::) And the worst part is that it is all about money >:(
-
Actually, it's probably about crashworthiness. I doubt most of those Jimnys have dual air bags, side impact beams, and are made to USA impact standards.
Most auto makers, world wide, use US/Cali emissions standards and the OBD-II computer system in their modern cars. I doubt emissions is the problem.

All I know is that it is a sweet little 4x4. I love the square look and it looks modern too. People like Hummers..and they look like a brick. There is a square looking Mercedes Suv. Land rovers are pretty square looking. If they offered it at a reasonable price it would sell like hotcakes....Piss me off, all we get is that crappy new Grand Vitara. When did they start making the Jimny's? I may consider having one imported to Canada when they are 15 years old....
I'm starting to underatand why people start Militia's and stop paying taxes.... >:(
-
Howdy,
I lived in Germany in 2000 when the Jimny debuted there and have crawled all over it. Also, I believe the coil sprung Samurai sold from 1997-1999(?) was simply a interim model/test bed before tooling/production of the new Jimny was completed. The suspension between the two appears to be identical.
That being said, the Jimny does look smaller than a Samurai but they are really close in size. I think the Sidekick like front windshield and targa bar makes it look smaller than it actually is. I also was not happy with the new design layout-gas tank in the middle of the floorplan, super small, reverse rotation front diff, etc. To me it seemed like Suzuki cross-bred a Samurai with a Sidekick and then tried to make it even more street friendly-a more sophisticated Samurai. They were a hit in Germany though and new Samurai sales in Germany stopped in 2001.
You can't really import one and expect to drive it on the US roads either. The magic rules are 21 years for the EPA and 25 years for the DOT. I know, I imported a 1956 VW Beetle back with me. I really wanted to grab a new Suzuki Samurai LWB but I simply couldn't do it legally.

not true at all, you can import a newer car. it just is a little more work.
-
I don't know about Canada but the US import laws are very stringent. Basically it can only be imported if the vehicle was sold in the US for the same year of production. For example, you could import a 1990 BMW 5 series but you would need to convert it to 1990 US specifications. You cannot do the work yourself either. The work must be completed by a government certified conversion shop. I've heard that the conversion work (change out glass for DOT glass etc) can easiliy run past $7000. I'm not sure if this applies to vehicles from Canada but this is the rule for vehicles coming from Europe.
For something like the Jimny, you could never import into the US until it was basically 25 years or older. Then all the DOT requirments can be waivered. That's how I got my Beetle in. Since it was nearly 50 years old at the time, it went right through customs despite the fact that it is euro-spec (no turn signals etc)
There are some shady ways of getting vehicles in (VIN swaps) for LWB Samurais and that works because most people don't recognize the difference between the SWB and LWB versions. However, if you have something that was never sold in the US and does not meet US DOT/EPA standards...well you can pretty much forget it until it is 25 year old.

I can't make a comparison between Euopean crash standars (ENCAP) and uS standars but the Jimnys sold over here do have side impact bars and dual airbags. They are most certainly OBDII and I too doubt if they would have any problems meeting the emissions standards.
-
I can't say either on the Euro vs US crash standards. I do know that when GM brought the Holden Monaro over as the Pontiac GTO a few years back the crashworthiness stuff was the major obstacle. Although they sell those in Pom, don't they.
-
If a S.M.ART car can be made street legal in the us....anything can.
-
Bring it over the canadian border in two peices, take the body off and unplug all conectors then make a trip for the frame and runing gear, then it turns into a parts car. i dont know if it would work but then you would prob have to do some kit car title or old vin swap. I was trying to figure out the process and i quit after i got a head ache from sitting on hold with different agencies. you have to first get a letter from the manufacturer saying it meets all standarts for the U.S. then if anything needs to be changed, it has to be done at a custom shop. i called suzuki but never accually got ahold of the import person. i talked to a few reps but gave up after i began to realize the only way is the illegal way.
-
yea, I would like to import one of those someday as well. that or a coil sami
wicked stuff

that is an interesting 3 link those have, 2 solid links on the bottom with a panhard bar instead of having 2 fully free moving links on the bottom and a 3rd link that's A arm like up top... very interesting, that thing looks super easy to lift
-
but also expensive, those modifications done on that car boost expenses with 1/3 on a new car :o

I do, because I'm Dutch 8-). Dieter is a nice guy to do business with ( sadly his father - the other half of D&G - died last week, so work has no priority for now ). Great stuff, these Jimny's, theye are still on the "expensive" side of "wannahave" for now, better wait a coupe of years ;)
-
hello Nitromax!
sorry to hear about dieter's father.
i must say that i'm a big fan of you'r FunZilla, really like that car!
nice informative website you got there, been regularily checking in to see what's new.

Wow :o. Any story behind that?
Sucks for him, hope he made it out alright.
-
He came up to a hard left downhill corner too fast cliped the inside of the corner got it sideways rolled the front drivers side tyre off the rim then crossed it up again rolled the rear passenger tyre off the rim then speared into the dirt wall spun around and hit the back.
"NO INSURANCE"
-
The ARB bar looks alright but it seems to be sitting to one side a bit. No insurance :( that's got to hurt.
-
I would think the frame on that is tweaked hard. That is quite a bummer, a friend of mine messed up his sidekick frame pretty badly by sliding into a boulder in the ice
-
They're all over the Bahamas. Buy one there, put some 44s under it and drive it home. The air in the tires will keep you afloat. ;D
