Well, the wife told me it was starting to brake funny. I was hoping the front pads would last longer until I had the time to put the lift on at the same time...guess not.
So it's on jackstands waiting for the new Bendix semi-metallics. Brakes aren't my thing so I'm hesitant in doing all this stuff.
Anything I should know or look out for while doing this?
Can I use an impact to get the caliper retaining bolts out? They're in there pretty good and my 1/2" ratchet doesn't seem to want to budge them.
-
did you spray them with WD40 and let um sit?
(If not the impact should be cool)

go and get yourself some brake lube(silicone) for the sliders and some anti seize compound from the parts store. i also like to spray a little bit of lube under the caliper piston boot (fluid film is great). before installing the pads make sure you clean all the dirt off of the bracket that the pads sit in and put a small bit of the anti seize on the back of the pad - it will keep it from squeaking. if you are not replacing the rotors take them off and using a hammer knock off all the rust ridges on the out side edges of the rotor. i also like to chamfer the edge of the pad a small bit so the paint on the side of the pad does not squeal on the rotor. i think that is it for now. good luck
derek

I'm going to take the rotors in and see what the local machining shop says about turning them. They look a bit grooved to me.
The squealers didn't seem to squeal. :P

I couldn't get mine off with a ratchet either. I was able to get better leverage using a 3" extension and a breaker bar angled out of the wheel well. Now I'm stuck trying to pull my ball joint out though :'(

Hey maplebar, you have to do anything special to retract the piston in the calipers?
-
I just used the screw driver trick

I'm not familiar with brakes either and didn't notice right away when I had it right, but at some point I noticed that they had a little play when I messed with them by hand.
-
Thanks man, good luck with the lift!
I'll bug you when I start on our GV's lift. The "instructions" are a bit lacking to say the least. :P You going mostly by the FSM/Chiltons/Haynes?
-
Well, got the calipers and their brackets off. Took a 3' long breaker bar and my rubber mallet but they came off. Kudos to Suzuki for using caliper bolts that aren't little twigs. I seem to remember my Ranger and my Ram having MUCH smaller caliper bolts...a similar process would likely result in snapped off heads. :-X
Looks like on both sides the inside pad was wearing faster than the outside pad to the extent where the inside pads are practically gone. In addition the driver's side set seemed to be wearing at an angle which meant the inside driver's side pad was actually dragging the metal backing plate on the rotor where all the material wore off on the rear of it.:o
Now to go find some 8mm bolts at the local hardware store and get those rotors off. I live in such a bustling metropolis ::) that none of the machine shops are open today. >:( Hopefully I can have them turned and have it all back together tomorrow.
Are there any bearings, races, seals, etc on the inside of the rotor? Never had a Suzuki apart before. Wish I had thought to take the hubs off BEFORE I disassembled the front brakes.
Since I need the 8mm bolts to take the rotor off...how do I reinstall it? The FSM just says "reinstall rotor".
-
I don't remember using any 8mm bolts when I changed my rotors ???
If I remember right, I took the caliper and pads off and the rotor just comes off. (with a little convincing ;D )
-
Eh, mine definately needed the bolts. Although I can see how a mallet and spinning the rotor would work as well. Oh well, I now have the bolts to do it. I think they fit the rear drums as well.
Dunno what I was thinking about the hubs, bearings, and rotors either, probably Chrysler and Ford. Popped right off after some twisting of those 8mm bolts. 8)
I'm sure I'll be back in a day or so with more questions. :P

Thanks, I'm mostly going with the FSM plus cross referencing with the BDS and JDMCRX install instructions. For the 2nd side I just used the BDS instructions as a check list.
-
Which BDS instructions are you using?
-
http://www.bds-suspension.com/pdfs/037201-2-3.pdf
-
How'd they seem to work for your newer gen?
-
Worked perfectly, of course it's not very detailed. The instructions are basically remove brake calipers, disconnect tie rod, disconnect steering knuckle from balljoint, etc... On the first side I was reading the service manual constantly as I am completely new to doing anything but an oil change. On the second side the BDS instructions worked great as a checklist to make sure I keep everything straight.
-
Did you have to grind on the upper part of the knuckle?
-
no, I didn't notice any clearance problems there. The only thing I ground down was my strut to get the extensions to fit. I will also have to grind off some of my shock mounts to get the new shocks in.
I did notice that some of the front end components are different on the Tracker than on GV's. The brakes are a different model (both bolts are the same size), and I didn't notice a lip on the WMS that I have heard about which would prevent wheel spacers from fitting right.
-
Lip on the wheel mounting surface...nothing like that on mine either. Huh. ???
-
Here you go.
