Hey guys, I'm building a light bar for my track/kick and want to upgrade the alternator on it. I searched and found a lot of info, mostly just generic. Did find a few brackets out there for it. I'm gonna go with the Trail Tough lower bracket, but I need to find out from someone who has actually done this swap what vehicle application the alternator was originally from. I really want to run the 105amp GM alternator (popular in the later 80's and into the 90's). I know S10 Blazer's have them, Beretta's have them, etc. But there are like 20 or 30 different model numbers of different 105 amp Alt.'s. I also read from someone (will have to go back and search again for who said it) that it needs to have the correct regulator. They said it needed to have a regulator model # D10SE12. They started out with one with the wrong reg. and it killed the battery. After they figured out what it was, it was a $4 fix. So any help is greatly appreciated with this swap.
Thanks in advance,
Bryan

I'm going to buy a rebuilt Hitachi Alternator and have it recoiled to put out more amps. If I'm going to install extra electronics, I'm going to need more juice.
So I too would like some help on this subject. :)

I like the Pep Boys replacement warranty so I told them I need an alternator for an 86 suburban 350ci, 4x4, power everything, A/C. This ensured me I'll be getting the high output alternator. No problem running 2 100watt hellas, 100 watt backup light, highbeams and heater fan on high and still putting out 15 volts at idle. 8)
Keeps up when using the winch too.

OK cool. 86 Suburban 4x4 350ci...
Anyone know if the same ones will work in both sami's and kicks...
Keep 'em comin' guys!

And what number might this be from? Manufacturer, Pep Boys, Advance Auto Parts, Napa???? That's why I asked for applications... ;)

I work at a company that rebuilds sterter and alternators. The D10SE12 is a 10 SI type delco this was on older cars and trucks but the SE means self exiting. You will only need to hook up a battery cable and go. It requires a little wiring but the smaller case CS130 is rated at 105A and fits the same lower bracket. This unit was in early 90's gm cars and trucks there is basicly three main configurations and they are top ear at 12:00, top ear at 10:00 and top ear at 2:00. there was minor differences like clocking position but most can interchange each other. I used alternator Delco # 10463150 or lester # 7964-11 most parts stores will be able to cross these # into their own. I used this # due to the offset and clocking configuration. you will have to buy a new reg plug but it will wire up if you decide to go this route I can help you wire the new plug. PS my unit was rated at 105A but it actually puts out 118A. Way more than the 78A unit in the 10SI unit suggested. Also the stock charge light will still function. I have a large stereo and needed max output.

I'd suggest you read through the following links ...

I too have this mod on my "todo" list ... probably going with a 94a 12SI three wire when I do it.

Sounds like you're the man I need to talk to! So you actually run the Delco # 10463150 and it works fine, correct? Is this in a sami or a track/kick? Does it matter? Also, where would I get the new reg plug for this alternator? Thanks for the info. My dad manages an Advance Auto Parts store so I'll get him to run that # and see what he can do.
Thanks again!

Also, did you use the pulley that came on it, or did you have to switch the stock pulley over to that alternator?

this might work, but you would have to change the pully and buy a alt bracket. i ordered one from T.T. today, now waiting to find an alt. :-/

Here is a lay out I've gotten off this board with some picturs for a GM homemade braket.

t.t. alt bracket in the mail. so i called oooreileys and they cant a delco alt anymore. so i used the info on the mad electric site and am getting a 94 amp one from the yard tomorrow for $25 (the 12si one). then just have it rebuilt for $60. the other option at Ooo was going to be $95 for a 94 amp one. will prob get the mad wiring kit too. $27 for it aint bad. then i can hook up my lights on the roof rack ;D
-
rebuilt 12si's at napa are $40 aren't they? (94amp)
(or jc whitney?)
-
well i didnt call napa :-/ but the OOO ones were rebuilt and then they put their brand on it. prob same at napa. price at O seems high cause i added the core charge, i am keeping my alt for a spare for my g/f tracker. i guess i will try napa in the AM and see, but i trust my rebuild place better that OOs or NAPAs, will let you know. 8)

Any more thoughts anyone???

I'm keeping the stock alt on mine, It tested out at 69 amps, the stock ones are supposed to last longer in water and mud, something about the chebby's shorting out. how many lights are you putting on your rig? at 100w ea. thats only 8.3 amps each or so.

only 2 up front on the brush guard that would ever be run on the street. 3 up top on a light bar, but they won't be used very often at all...I already have a pair of air horns and the headlights dim when I hit the horn at night...

Sounds like you need to get a larger battery is all. maybe a gel cell type.
-
Scottrodmn...where did you go?? I PMed ya about this thread...had a couple more questions. ???

got 12si 94amp alt from junk yard $25
new brushes etc, and a nice clean up $35
new wireing kit from M.A.D. El. $27
alt bracket from T.T. ... uh, $20 something i think.
waiting on the wires to get here and will try to have a pic or 2 if the weather holds and i can get it put in in 2 weeks or so.
-
Can't wait to hear how it goes ... let us know if the MAD kit was worth it (as opposed to just fabbing one yourself).

JUST CURIOUS WOULD THE HIGHER AMP ALTERNATER DAMAGE ANY [ELECTRICAL] THING
-
The only problem I can think is that you would probably have to run a heavier gauge cable from the alternator to the battery.
-
same voltage 13.8+-.any higher and you srat damaging
things

my understanding is that they are about the same 'volts' and the extra amps wont hurt.

this is why i went with the MAD setup, since it is really for V8 cars, looks really heavy duty...... still wainting >:( i hate waiting ;D :P

i like the pics of the brackets. I just got my T.T. gm bracket today WOW what service and the bracket looks better then stock. What bracket is being shown in the pic for the upper adjuster? The alt that i have is a monster. My stock upper bracket won't fit at all. I picked this alt up from a speed shop that is closing. they mostly did camaro and corvettes. it tested perfect and at 97 amp my little sami should do just fine.

The airhorn's compressor draws somewhere around 20 amps, that's why they usually come with a relay and instructions to wire them through a relay so you don't blowup the stock horn wiring. That big of an amp draw can't help but dim the lights momentarily and it's so quick that by the time the alternator catches up, the load is gone...

I have looked for an alternator for about a month now. Never found a $40-50 price!
Mostly $79-129 plus a $30 core charge.  I checked some of the cars and trucks mentioned on Autozone on line. They even want a core charge on an ALL NEW unit!
At that price, might buy the Petro kit.
Any one got a rebuilder in their area? They could stock some and get some bussiness from all of us trying to find one. I prefer the CS130 because someone said it was smaller than the 12?
I am also worried about the top mount, I think it should be moved from the small stud on the water pump up to those big bolts on the head?
I have put a lager batery in that fills the whole space (24 or 25 Group?). Eventually I might put my Ham radio and possibly a wench in the Sammy.
Thanks for the thread! ;D

maybe this will help. I run dual batteries in my tracker. my second battery is located in the back of my 2dr.I do run an isolater(bought at auto zone)ALL my accesseries run off of this battery(500cca) stock alternater.I ran long wires from front to back battery mounted isolater under hood that way if my main(for starting) should fail i can switch to my 2nd. Much easier and cheaper than alt swap. good luck.

Just wanted to bump this thread and let everyone know I got the alternator swapped out. I used a 94a 12SI GM unit. I'll post the part number at the bottom of this post. Everything was very straight forward. There is a 2 wire plug on the back side on the alternator. You will need the pigtail for this. I read in one of the articles somewhere how to hook this up. The red wire I jumped back to the main post on the back of the alternator. The white wire gets spliced into on of the 2 wires that went into the plug that plugged into the back of the stock alternator. Evidently the colors changed from year to year on the wires. Mine was the white wire. Pick one, doesn't matter which one. Start by just twisting the wires together and make sure they're not touching anything. Start the truck. Now turn the truck off. If the truck keeps running and doesn't turn off like it should, you have the wrong wire (I picked the black one first. LOL) IF this happens, just pull the wires apart to kill the truck. Splice into the other wire and you're golden. So far, everything is working great.
Lester Number: 7294-3
Any auto parts store should be able to cross reference that number.
