Title: The 4-door Sidekick
Post by: Jayzuki on May 01, 2006, 01:03:51 AM
I like the 2-door convertible alot. It is an excellent vehicle for summer cruising and so much more. You have to love the killer visibility they offer [ no blind spots ]. Lately I have been looking into the 4-door version and since I dont know anyone who's owned one I wonder a few things about them as I am starting to like them more and more. Remember I ve had a 2-door JX!

Here is what I know about them

- have a bigger capacity fuel tank

- alot of them came with the 16V

- have a less choppy ride [ not that I care ]

-all models came with Powersteering

- share many acceceries with the 2-door.

WHat I wonder

- do they sqeek and rattle more? Like I meen inside the interior.

- are they more prone to body damage? [ like rust and dents and things ]

- Do they have a much different feel to them compared with the 2-door?

- I guess they are still really good offroad

- If they handle better in icy and slippery conditions

- what parts are different than ones on the 2door convertible

- how problem prone the extra 2 doors can be?

I am trying to decide between the 2 and 4 door for my purchase.

Anyhelp is good

thanks

Ive only owned a 4 door.
But Ive had it for over 5 years and something like 80K miles.
I dont notice much squeeking and rattling.
So far I have had no problems with the rear doors.
16v is good.  Powersteering is very good.

- Can the rear seats be take right out? I meen without hassle?

Undo 4 bolts in front of the seat and it will come right out. Takes 5 minutes or less.

- do they sqeek and rattle more? Like I meen inside the interior.

My Tracker 4 door has 74,000 on it now. No squeeks or rattles. My wifes Kick has 160,000 and everything is still tight on it too. They have a little wind noise at the top of the doors at speeds over 70 MPH but it isn't too bad. We converse over it on drives.

- are they more prone to body damage? [ like rust and dents and things ]

Same design, same metal. Same areas seem to rust on both in ones I looked at in Michigan. The area around the windshield seems more prone to rust on the 2 doors though.

- Do they have a much different feel to them compared with the 2-door?

A little more stable feeling on and off road due to the longer wheelbase.

- I guess they are still really good offroad

Oh yeah.  ;D

- If they handle better in icy and slippery conditions

I haven't driven a 2 door through a winter yet but the 4 doors are very predictable. Even took my wifes 2wd on a 2000 mile snowboarding thrip last winter. Blizzard conditions the whole trip. With it's AT tires it performed great. I was impressed.

- what parts are different than ones on the 2door convertible

They dont have a removable top.  ;D J/K ...All the doors are different. The frame is different. The bumpers front and rear are a different design. And then the stuff you mentioned.

- how problem prone the extra 2 doors can be?

I have never seen any hinge issues on the rear doors yet in any I have owned or looked at.

Hope that helps. I really like the 4 door model. But, if you want the top down for some summer wheeling your out of luck.  :-\

Yes, they are more stable in the icy conditions.
My 2dr has a habit of spinning all the way around when your playing in the stuff
Alot easier than a 4dr.

I have a 2dr and 4dr and love'em both and are both modified.
My 4dr has 127,000 miles and has a few extra squeeks but not too bad.
I think my Calmini bushings weren't greased properly when installed.

And everyhting else that Shredder said.

The lwb is more forgiving when you push it hard. The back end is easier to catch and control when it steps out  ;D The ride is better, climbs a bit better and has more room and a bigger gas tank. That said I still like my swb too with it's tighter turning circle and better rampover. The actual difference in wheelbase and overall length isn't that much but it does make a difference.

i bet you it's your heim joint. i thought the samething at first but it turned out to be that the hein joint wore out. sprayed it with wd40, and it stopped for a day or two. so i replaced it with a higher quality unit, and so far no problem.

i'm looking for a 4dr for all the reasons above to use as a daily driver.

the 4dr is a new kit so I'm sure it's not wore out yet.
I sprayed my front bushings with W-40 and it did quit, I'm gonna have to take it apart and really grease them.

Yes, 4 doors rock

I need to find the pic with my 3 kids and a dog in the back while we are wheeling.

I am seriously considering the 4-door. The vehicle I purchase isnt going to be on the road much for 2 years because my license has been prohibited for drinking and driving.  I will be getting a Sidekick and working on it, adding aftermarket as time goes and as budget allows. I have an excellent yard with lots of space for it, so the machine wont be a hassle sitting outside my home. I love the 2door convertible but the 4-door is taking my attraction because I think it will be better in the long run, more usefull and still has all the aftermarket support. I just cant clear my mind about having 4doors and no removable top. ANYbody have any pics of them with the rear seat removed?

I'm rather partial to four doors:

Of course, I wouldn't mind having a 2 door as well!   ;D

Thats very nice. Very sharp and clean. How hard is it to wire those HELLA lights you have with the stock bumper system?

Thanks

Jayzuki,

Mounting the Hellas was actually pretty easy....I bought some angled steel that was pre-drilled (found at Home Depot/Lowes)....I in turn mounted that to the stock bumper, and bolted the lights to the angled steel stock.

I'll have to take some closer up pics for you to see....

Good luck with finding a rig!

Lighting is a very important thing!! Your set up looks like it does the trick, for the front anyway.

Thanks

I really need to get a 4-door sidekick due to my growing family, but I'm having a hard time giving up the 2-door convertible  :'( I think I'll be selling my 2-door and buying a 4-door very soon. Then, when the money builds up again, I'll get another 2-door convertible(in better shape than mine) to modify and wheel.

Hello All,

I just found a 1992 4dr with 39,000 in my local junkyard...Yes I've ask for parts there I know them very well....It's not a Tracker he said it's a Suzuki Sidekick....So I just kinda rolled my eyes...They bought it at an auction 5 yrs ago...They said it needs a motor(16V) What year are the computers that go bad???It now has a little rust above the rear wheel wells...They didn't wash the salt off!!! And the best part......$300 LOL    And I have a 2 door with 33's and it's crazy now!!  I know guys I need to post new picks....Bad Tom !!!!  I have had it balanced on the front tires twice now...Both back tires over a foot off the ground!!! Kinda scary...Off road I'd say the 2door rocks!!! The 4 door will be my new DD....That's better than my 2003 S-10 with the $330 month payment!!!! I'll get new picks ASAP....My DSL at home craped out....

Later Tom K

Put 4 kids, sleds, cooler, and more in my 4 dr and went to the hills.  The vehicle drives great, love the steering.  Drive on interstate and is stable.  I need to add a low gear for offroad but no complaints.  A lot of parts are different like front grill, but a lot are interchangeable.
