sorry to ask it over and over but i can't sdeem to find what i want by searching. i have a 1993 jx 2 dr 4x4 sidekick. it has the 44 liter tank and i can not figure out why for the life of me my gas milage is so low. i am only getting about 300 KM per tank. and the way gas is going up its getting hard to pay for it. i dunno what it is in MPG i tried finding a converter but to no avail. i was hoiping somone could tell me how to get my kick up to where it is suposed to be for milage. and also any mods drastic or not that people have done to improve there mialge. anything form simple liek air filter to expensive liek engin swap. i love my car and dont' wanan get rid of it. i love the 4 wheelin, but if gas keeps goin up i fear as a student i am going to have to get rid of it and get a little rice rocket:( :'( thanx again everyone. Are you anywhere near Vancouver BC? I am looking to buy a Sidekick and yours is something I would consider, thats if you sell it. I live close to VAN.

If you haven't done it yet I recommend a basic tune up including setting the valves and timing. I've had good success with K&N air filters adding about 2MPG depending on the vehicle.

Sounds like you are getting ok mileage I get about 300km on a tank but I am pushing bigger tires and more weight with bumpers but if you are getting 300 miles per tank dont complain

If you are burning 44 liters in 300 km, that works out to about 16mpg (if my math hasn't failed me). I would assume you are filling it before it is empty, so your mileage is probably consistent with what some others have reported--18 mpg or so.
My sport, with 1.8l, 16 valves, and 5-speed, gets a consistent 32 or 33 mpg. However, that is at speeds below 60 mph (100 km/h) and no quick starts or stops. The mileage drops to around 27 mpg at speeds of 65. Driving habits are a big factor. Your kick should get in the high 20s or better if it is in good shape and you keep your toe out of the throttle body.

I find that tire pressure realy affects my gas mileage. Low 20's at "factory recommended" 23 psi, but increases to high 20's if I pump the tires up to about 32psi. (This is a '96 16v with a 5 spd.) It rides like a brick, but I think its worth it.

hey sorry so long to reply. work troubles and everything. anways tahnx for all the replys i tried everything everyone suggested but still the same. and its just under 300 not 300 exact, but the under is when its rite out of gas. by rite out i mean jerry can on the side of the highway lol. anyways.... me and the auto teacher tried to redo the timing but we couldn't get the check engin light to come on when we used the service port and shoted the terminal out like all data said. so i went to suzuki here in barrie and he was telling me the 93s are netorius for bad computers and throtel boddies. my auto teacher said the same. so i am taking it inot suzuki in 2 days to get them to check it out. the rates sumthing like 90/hr but if it takes an hr and they can tell me whats wrong its well worth it to me. and my tire pressure is at 35 i pumped it way up at the start of summer. but it got the same milagfe in winter at 23 psi. dunno y but somthigns screwy. anymore ideas would be greatly appricated.

The 1993 Sidekick 1.6L engine is estimated to get 23-27 MPG. Considering the age of your machine and the auto trans you have it should get 20-25 MPG. You said your Suzuki wasn't modified right?
I had a 1991 2-door 4x4 JX removable HT with the same gas tank and I would get 350km during city driving and I got even less when using it on the highway. The small motor really works hard and is sensitive to changes. So sensitive to changes that even the Kn filter I added changed operation performance and economy, machine was 100% stock. If your exhaust system was plugged you could lose hardcore MPG. Too bad you can't cut the CAT!!

only thing changed is i put 235's on her. but yea the exhaust is fine its new from the downpipe back. i tried that whole " no cat" thing when i knocked it off 4x4ing oneday lol but sounded to bad so i put it back on:P lol anywyas keep em coming

I went over 32psi I think, mileage still didnt improve

dude you answered your question. 235's will rob you of mileage, along with probably needing a full tuneup could put you were your now. you should try to find a front and rear third from a 5spd sidekick or tracker, this will return your lost performance, and mileage although you'll lose some top speed from the offset gear ratio. 235's in an auto with 4.62 gears is a recipe for bad gas mileage.

i thought the tires woudl be bad to, but the milage didn't even change 1 km still just under 300 with 205, 215 or 235's. there is a wreaker round here that has a coupl of them how much work is involved in getting them out and putting them in? and whats a good price for them?

and as far as loosing power it wont matter it has none to begin with. i almost fail my driving test cuz it was ahving a hard time reaching 80 km/h on the on ramp lol. and as far as hills. lets just say it rather go down them lol

The small engines are pretty sensitive. If you had a timing issue, didnt have a fresh tune-up, had bad wheel bearings you would use much more gas. What about your drivetrain fluids and the condition of your rear end? I dont know what there is to greace on Sidekicks?

01. O2 sensor been changed lately? Check how rich your mix is. I can tell right away when somethings wrong with my mix because my tailpipe gets all sick black looking.
02. Changed your fuel filter lately? I had a clogged filter one time and I thought it was my fuel pump, so AFTER pulling the tank and testing it, changing the filter dawned on me!
03. How fresh is the gas you are using, have you tried different gas vendors?
04. Check your tire balance and wear of tire. It seems when I run a tire to its max life, near the end I get the worst handling, mpg and comfort.
05. PCV been changed lately? When I was running stock with my 91 four door, I changed this little bugger out and I was consistantly getting around 480-500 km a tank. Keep in mind I just replaced back to stock my exhaust and changed the filter to k&n. Since then the kick has a new manifold and exhaust and intake, so now I get what you get 'cause I drive the snot out of it.
06. Get a general tune-up, fluids, and if you have a little bit of cash, replace your plugs, wires and cap and rotor.
Hope some of that helps. I was playing the MPG game for years, and not just with zukes, so don't worry, you'll get it back!

thanx stevo. i completly forgot about the pcv valve. me and the teacher will check it. and by the sounds of it my oz sensor is gone becasue it is black in the tail pipe bad. well check these two things and get back asap thanx again.

ps i was just wondering if there was anywya to check the o2 sensor without swaping it out. the check engin light isn't on but wondering if there still is a way?
