Title: Hi, I'm new to forum. Need info
Post by: Heiny57 on May 09, 2006, 07:10:39 PM
Hey guys i am new to the forum and to suzuki four wheelers. I noticed two lifted rigs last year in Memphis and thought they would be fun. I have two teenage son's and one is addicted to mud. We built an S10 and he had fun with that until the dents out numbered the shiney panels. Now I must be losing my mind because I am looking at getting into these things.

So,,, I would  appreciate any info and advice, on getting started in this endever to lesson the costs and mistakes I will shurly make in getting started.

I have wrenched on many machines in the 70,s and 80's. but I don't like computers and fuel injection. I guess I shuold start with an 80's model. The 88.5 seem to be popular. Do they have a real carb or throttel body fuel injection.

Thank's in advance for any info now or in the future.

 :) ;D ???

And as you can see I don't spell either.  Where's the spell check.

You are why the following site exists:

Ack's FAQ (http://www.acksfaq.com)

You'll find that the early Samurais were carbed, there are at least 3 common replacements for the OEM Hitachi, that FI is your friend on the trail and to your wallet, the Tracker 1.6 16-valve is one of the most straightforward investments in more power available followed closely by the VW Diesel conversion (which will feed on your dislike for FI!).

Check out the FAQ -- especially the link to the Beta version which has nearly twice the searchable data then the current FAQ and is about to go online.

thanks for replys, i like the deasel motor conv. FI would probably be better on trails, how much trouble are the early models. I am starting to look at some for sales, any things to look for besides the usual.

Start with a stock sami. Run it until the engine grenades, replace motor w/ an upgrade.

Worked for me.  ;D

I finally got around to looking at the V6 swap. That could be good... but whats it like on fuel? If its really bad I'm sticking with the TD.

It's a V6... so... going to suck gas compaired to a 4 banger, and be prepaired to beef up your front suspension to compensate for the added weight. As with all things 4 wheeling - find the motor YOU think will work for YOU. If gas mileage is a big concern for you - this is not the motor for you. If power is your concern - this IS the motor for you. Most people seem to be happy with a 4 banger though.

I average about 25 with the 16v, with a 4.1 t-case and a fairly heavy foot. The diesel would have got better mileage but, the cost diesel and the $$$ extra it would have cost to put in the TD would have not have been worth it in my opinion.

Diesel is GREAT for wheeling, but is BAD for daily driver.

I guess stock is probably where to start, and see what happins. Has anyone bought a sami of ebay? Good or bad? I live in TN and theres not to many for sale around here, most are out west.

Unless you can actually see and test drive it, I would NOT buy a vehicle off ebay.

Try the Thrifty Nickle newspaper, the local classifieds, RV centers (the bulletin board there) and "low-rent" used car lots.  Drive through older neighborhoods where people have RVs and junky cars in general.

You'll find one (maybe a gem!) better that way.

Wouldn't it be better to buy one that is allready lifted and geared ect. if it can be bought cheap, (let someone take they beating on the intalls) and just fix things as they break like usual?

Yes and no. If it has been modified and is being sold cheaply it might be ready to explode. It is always easier (and usually cheaper) to start from scratch then to pick up where someone else left off. If you aren't really sure what you want, I would say to start fro stock and build what you want. You may get what you consider a "steal" on a modified rig but, you also inherit every modification that person has put on. And you may find out that you don't want what they did, and end up having to redo it anyway.

I prefer to start with a blank canvas (so to speak) and go from there. That way you end up with what you want and can afford. It also has the added bonus that you built what your rig, not somebody else.

thanks takai, maybe i might look for a sammi with calmini spoa only and go from their. I travel a lot for work and it is hard to find time to work on things. Its not my ability ,or cost of parts, I am time restrained for fun and fixing. I do need to learn more about gearing and tire size. I searched info and learned if you gear you should do transfer and ring and pinion, seems like a lot. Hence my thought of buying allready done. ??? ??? ???
