I've been lurking here in the past six months and have gotten to know a lot about the posters here... And I have one small question for Heather and Nate, I'm doing a SAS on a 2005 Tracker and would like to know that if I use FJ-80 Axles front and rear do they come with the electric lockers already or is that something I have to purchase separately? And which leafs springs did you use? I'm debating on them or Dodge Durango Springs backed with Nitro filled Shocks. I already have redone the engine bay with a GM 6.2L Diesel with a Gale Banks Blower Just the engine alone is putting out
+124 hp and +303 lb-ft . The engine bay is crammed tight and the firewall has been pushed back 4 inches yet I've managed to retain the stock appearance. Now I need to turn my attention to the suspension if I want to keep the 4 wheeldrive, my transfer case is no longer stock and I now have a Dana 300.

I DEMAND that you post pics before anyone help you out... that sounds like a kickass rig, and I wanna see it! ;D
I believe they are using YJ springs... might be too soft for the additional weight of the diesel, though :-/

I second this!! Pictures Please!
-The YJ springs might work if you add a leaf or two, but then again, that sounds like a heavy engine....

Wait a minute they didn't make '05 trackers >:( Whats going on here ??? this sounds a little far fetched :-/(no offense) ;)

fj-80 axles are offset front and rear and to work with a Dana 300 your rear driveshaft will be on an angle.
Yes you can get the fj80 diffs with factory lockers, they are more common without the lockers though.
whatever leafs Heather and Nate used willnot work for you as your engine is WAY heavier than theirs and will require different springs to compensate!!!
oh and PICS!!! ;D

SAS on a late model trac/kick :o ... CANT WAIT FOR PICS !!!!

Let me clarify this it's a 2003 ZR2 4 Door purchased new in Jan. 2005 new from the dealership with Zero miles. Not trying to pull the 'wool' over anybody's eye's here. I also don't care what you think, it's not yours anyway and I have nothing to prove, other than my lack of knowledge for the FJ-80 axles and which spring rate to use. (no offense)
As for photograph's they're under wrap's till the trucks' day-view with Kelly Conlin and PRIMEDIA publications so you will have to wait for their release until till then.

Congrats on having the guts and the cash to do something like this but I hope you did something to strengthen the frame cause that big diesel is gonna twist your frame into a pretzel.

:)
Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I've had to start working nights, and my schedule is all messed up.
So to answer your questions..
Certain FJ80 axles will come with the electric lockers STOCK. You'll have better luck with the lockers in axles out of 94-97 model year vehicles. Those are also front high pinion, and full floating front and rear. They sometimes consider those years the F -Z- J80.
The FJ80 axles front and rear are right hand (passenger side) offset.
Here's a site with a listing of used parts for an FJ80, axles included.
http://www.cruiserparts.net/parts/fj80.htm
Look around at your local junkyards too. That's where we found ours.
Bobby Long also makes birfields for the FJ80s.

As for the leaf springs, we run Sky Jacker "Rock Ready" Double Mil Wrap lift springs. They are strong springs, and may work for your setup. We run 2.5" lift in the front and 4" lift in the rear. They work well, and so far have settled perfect.

Our buddy with the Bowtie tracker (283 v8 203 tranny) uses the Skyjacker springs as well. He went 4" lift all the way around.
I bet that the weight the YJ's carry with the 4.0s in the front would most likely equal out similar to what you have, when decked out as well.
Stock Chevrolet Tracker Curb Weight - 2700-3000lbs
Stock Wrangler YJ - (from what i can find) is 3050-3400lbs.
Add bigger tires, bolt ons, etc... (I've googled and seen some jeeps weighing in at 6000 lbs)
Anyway.. I know MY truck weighs somewhere around 4-4500lbs curb weight. (amazingly) The springs have handled just fine.. and I haven't needed a traction bar. You may, with your engine, though.
You will also need to obtain or make a high steer arm for the FJ80 axle. We sent off our knuckle to OTT Industries who modified it, and made an arm for us. The price wasn't bad, and the arm is WAY strong.

You have to be patient with OTT, though. Don't be in a hurry. I think they're a three man shop, and get things done as they can, one after another. They do good work though.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can answer more questions for you.

Easy there Diesel Duke, Since this was your second post I thought I'd help get you used to the way we talk with each other there. Real_Red_Wagon asserted a question with an abundant amount of smilies to let you know that he has a bit of skeptisizm in what your saying but is not trying to ruffle your feathers.
Your reply seemed to indicate your feathers we ruffled.

Thank you, Eric

hi hcgalvin, the fj80 axles, what gear ratio are you using? thanks
-
They're 4.10..
I can get 4.88 or 5.29 if I need to.
I'm ok going down the road, a little clutch slippage at lights, but I can do 65-70 on the freeway. This is with two transfercases.
I'm planning on though, getting gears for the sammy case which will lower my high range and compensate, so I don't have to tear apart the diffs.
:)

hey was just reading sounds really cool the only questions I had and did not see answered(sorry if it was) did you strengthen chassis? the other question was about the engine.....you might wanna check the numbers again since the 6.2 in an 87 burb was putting out 150 hp and jus over 300 lb ft of torque have you dynoed it yet? and does it ride on the front wheels only  ;D ;D
the engines is about 800 lbs if my memory is correct..
love too see the engine bay only !
-
sorry the other question for the other people in the know is will the toy axles even take that much torque ....in total offroad magazine there was a nissan GQ wich nissan's own back axle is almost as strong as a ford 9" ...this truck was using a 6.5 duramax and b4 they did the upgrades to the engine they had to go to dand 60"s i think they said

The FJ80 axle is pretty much considered a 9", in all technicality.
Plus, it's not just the engine that can put out torque.. it's also the gears. ;)
We were putting almost 900 ft lb of torque into the stock suzuki axle with both the transfercases in low gear, (one with 4.24) and the factory 5.12's. :O
Yeah I know.. 95 hp, and 900 ft lb. :P (we calculated the torque with all the numbers in the truck)
I'm pretty sure the FJ80 axles can handle it.
:)
-
i love mechanical power .....forgot what I was wathing but the torque of this buggy after all said and done was around 2600lbs of torque......crazy stuff....
-
oops mean 26000lbs
-
Remember that torque is the motivating force,
and even tho there might be a 26,000 ft lb output
with the gearing, it would be very difficult to get
that much power to the axles before the truck
starts to move, unless you are totaly stuck in solid
packed sand or trying to pull somebody out, you
would more than likley never reach that torque
output and snap axles, could happen, but I think
you would have to be trying really hard to do it

isn't trying too brake things half the fun? don't know the other half but will tell you when I am there

i know a guy with a sammy that has the 6:1 or 8:1 tcase ,not shur wich.but hes running dana 44s an lockers and has broken ring and pinions and axel shafts and u joints ,i couldnt believe it ,never thought a sammy could break 44s that easily ,hes gone through several axel parts .but hes really hard on it and binds it up every chance he gets.
