I need a new soft top, but I know that some of them out there are crap. I'm pretty sure this is one of them, but here's a like to what seems to be a pretty common auction on ebay.ÂÂ

I'm assuming these are the ones that everybody hates but it would be nice to here that they're wonderful, cause cheap (price wise) is a good thing for my budget.
Where else can a find a decent top for a relatively good price. this isn't a daily driver, but it'd be nice to be dry and be able to see out the windows!

Don't know specifically, but if your TracKick is '95 or newer, then it won't fit correctly out of the box because the fastening hardware changed.
Carefully check the seller's feedback comments.

hey ack,
I believe i've seen you on just about every board! I hope you don't mind, but I've posted links to your FAQ on a few sites. I've found it very useful on many an occasion!
oh, and my kick is an 89. I'm being cheap because i got the truck for free and so far the most i've spent was the $150 on building myself a custom exhaust. this top is gonna be worth more than the entire rest of the vehicle!

Thanks!
Sounds like a deal for you then -- I'd PM the seller about you truck just in case. I would jump all over that deal except I have a '96 & I don't need any more projects... ;D

I got one of those cheapy tops last fall/winter. It wasn't the same seller name but the pictures were the same and the setup of the ad was very similar. Price was also close. When it got here it was packed into a the smallest box physically possible and I had to let it sit and "expand" for a while. Kinda hard in Michigan in December. Anyways, I finally got it on and I found it had NO markings on it whatsoever. Who made it, I have no clue. Still, it seemed to be "good enough" and everything fit, if with a bit of effort. That said it was Michigan in December so it didn't have much stretch to it. The windows were clear and mostly free of scratches, the vinyl was all there and after a while the fold marks went away, and it is water/snow tight. The Tracker turned out to be DOA thanks to a cracked block so it's been sitting behind my garage since late January. No leaks from the top.
Is it top quality? No. Is it serviceable? Yes. Would I buy another in place of a Best Top at another $100 or so? Yes. :P
You might want to check for used ones on the forum and ebay as well. The guy that sold me my '96 got a great deal on the top that's on it now from a guy that put a hard top on his new Tracker. The top sat in his garage for years and then he sold it to the prior owner of my Tracker.
However I also bought a used top "in good condition" from a guy on this forum last fall for the '90 and ended up having $100 of moldy, worn out, non-working zipper, call me names when I complain, etc junk. So buyer beware I guess. Don't buy from kids. :P
Dunno if this helps or not.

Took a lot of effort to get mine to fit. After a while, it kinda streatched out to fit. The quality of the material isn't nearly as nice, so I suspect it will wear much faster.
I went cheap 'cause I didn't have the money for Best Top. I still think Best Top is better value over time, but... when you've only got so much money, you buy what will work when you need it.

i'm startin' to think that the extra $100 for a best top Replace-a-top might be worth it. especially since i live in such a harsh climate that the expansion and contraction will wear it out faster than down south (relative to me) from here.

I dunno if he's still on there, but there was a guy/company selling replacement tops that they made themselves. They're some kind of convertible top/boat sale/canvas/etc maker and seem to make nice stuff. Lots of good reviews and excellent feedback. They even had a Tracker top with tinted windows. 8) If I recall the price was competitive with the BesTop ones.

i'd be interested in that. my top isn't exactly beat but it isn't exactly new either. could use replaced and i'd be interested in some tinted windows i think.....

I bought a new top for the Sunrunner on ebay from a guy or company named bestman. I bought it because it had tinted windows and I thought it would look great on the black truck. I checked the feedback and it was all positive, (although now that i look at the feedback most of them said something like "top looks great cant wiat to but it on" most of them left feedback before they actually installed the top). I paid 311.00 plus 17.00 shipping for the top. When I installed it the top fit so tight in some places that the stitching was coming apart at the back bow (not much but enough to see light through) The windows all fit very loose and They sag horribly. The top is very very very thin no where near the thickness of they original bestop. after taking the top off twice both snaps that snap near the domelight came off and two of the snaps from the front also came off. Not to metion it makes horrible howling sounds driving at highway speeds and the longer i have had it the looser it fits and the louder it gets. I would NEVER buy this type of top I believe he said the company that made it is HARTZ.
Here is a link to the one i bought:

Hmmm...guess I was wrong, that appears to be the company I was thinking of. I think...

yep, i've just heard too many scary stories to risk not spending the extra 40% for the bestop which i can pretty well bet will be worth the cost.
thanks guys, ajm... thanks anywayz, gmj... sorry bout' the top, at $311 you can't even say you got what you paid for. that's a piss off. funny (well not that funny) today I actually tried to use a hammer drill i bought off ebay a few months ago for the first time. the power wire was only 3 feet long, and when i applied any pressure the motor would just stop... no torque at all. but in this case i did get what i paid for, it cost me a dollar brand new! you really gotta watch with ebay!!

I bough a top off Ebay, it was a Pavement Ends top, I stole it, I think I paid $65 or something..
turned out to be a nice top! It's thin, like denim, but have had it on for what, 5-6 months now? No problems.. is doing nicely so far, not loose or anything.. nothing torn or worn.
I have heard BAD things about Pavement Ends tops... but I have had good luck with this one, and it was less than $100 installed.. but the bad news is that I sniped it at that price, and the guy only had three... the last two went for over double what I paid. Like I said, I stole it.
If you run across a Pavement Ends top for CHEAP, grab it.. other wise, buy a Best Top.

Hello,
Stay away from these tops!!!! They are junk!!!! I had one and sent it back, the front ripped off and the rear plastic corner broke before I got it on. I had the shop |removethispart|@90 and was using a heat gun. So I went with a used 96 model top for my 90,lots of work but it was $75 and thats what I wanted.Buy it at your own risk,But I told you so!!!!!

My Kick had a Steel Horse brand (same brand as in the original post ebay ad) on it when I bought it and I have no idea how long it had been on. But it was shrunk to the point you could see daylight at the seams. I was scared to take it off for fear I'd never get it back on.
I've purchased a new Bestop, new Pavement Ends and used Bestops between my Kick & Geo (Yeah, I should'a converted them to the same hardware a long time ago). In my experiences, the Bestop brand has the highest quality but the highest $$. For the money, I agree with Quaddawg that the Pavement Ends brand seems worth it, especially if you are going to be offroading it where its likely to get scratched, etc.
