Title: Bio-Diesel Kick
Post by: magiccat on May 20, 2006, 09:40:29 AM
Has anybody done a diesel conversion with a kick?
Does anybody have a biodiesel suzuki?
Is this possible?
I think it would be great if worked out right  ;D

I have run my Samurai Diesel on BioD and it works great.
There are a few people onthe Diesel board that have installed them in track/kicks.

that's awesome!
Where can I find the diesel board? Zuwharie?
Did you have any problems?
do you make your own bio-diesel?
What kind of gas mileage did you get?
thanks

Zuwharrie and the diesel Samurai Yahoo group.
No problems at all, easiest swap I've ever done.
A friend makes the BioD
I get around 27 mpg but its a brand new motor and is still being broke in. Should get 30 to 32 mpg after 5000 miles.

Anyone know of a place that will do a 1.6 Turbo Diesel conversion? I don't have a garage :(

I did mine outside in my gravel driveway. It was very easy.

my 1.6lt suzuki engine still has some life in yet. But I really want to put a 1.6 vw diesel in it and run either bio diesel or svo. I have never done a motor swap, and seems pretty in depth to me; and expensive. Maby in the near future. I would really like to get a 4 door sidekick, with the diesel in it as the familly wagon. It's pretty interesting stuff though.

Looks like the swap is as complicated as you want to make it. If you go with a kit from these guys http://www.acmeadapters.com/index.php?sound=Y it'll cost you around $550 for the "delux" kit wich makes your life really easy.

It seems to get more complex if you elect to do upgrades at the same time like:
AC Delco Alternator
Power Steering
A/C
Remote oil cooler

The only other motor swap I've ever done was the 16V. The diesel swap is much easier.

If you dont mind me asking;how much did you spend on the swap?
I think i'm going to look around for some vw diesels.

Mine was on the higher end of the scale because I bought the motor brand new as well as everything else.

Added bonus of the diesel swap if you want to run bigger tires....

Appairently if you use around 30" tires and stock tranny, it puts the motor BACK into it's power range. In other words - you don't need gear reduction :)

Something to keep in mind when you're doing the "acutual" cost of the swap.

true I have 30x9.5 mt's with stock gearing
gears or the diesel would be good or both ;D
Have you run into any problems with the diesel?
have you run biodiesel or s.v.o.?
Thanks

That depends on which motor you use. If you use the 1.9 TD like I did you will need to run 33's to get the motor in the correct power range. It also has plenty of power for slow crawling without going with a low range reduction.

I was thinking before I would go with a 1.6L TrackKick motor. But, I've really been investigating the Diesel option more and more.

Do you know of some good web sites I can poke around on? I don't know much about where to source a motor, how to figure out which motor is right for me etc.

Sweet! Thanks!

So far I have my eye on the 1.6L Turbo... seems like it's exactly where I want to be with 30 or 31" tires, sami tranny, 5" of lift, and rear lockrites.

Did you have to get beefy springs up front to make up for the added engine weight?

Nope, Its only like 20 lbs heavier than the stock Sammy motor. I still have stock front springs and a heavy bumper and winch and its doing great.

Anyone know of a West Coast (near Sacramento, CA) shop that will do this conversion?

I've talked out with a couple wheeling buddies of mine about what kind of trails and driving I'll be doing. I've decided I don't want a radical trail rig, but rather something I can use to snowboard, and light duty trails (hunting or just fun).

I think for now, I'm going to keep my sami pseudo stock. Here's what I'm thinking now...

Calmini shackle reversal w/ 2" lift
~ 235 75 R15 All Terrain tires... maybe something a little more meaty?
~ 1.6L Short Block
~ 1.3L Head with 1.6L exhaust valve
~ Special ground cam from hawkins.com (already on my dresser  8) )
~ Tri-Y header, or home brew header (famous last words - how hard can it be? )
~ 2" or 2 1/4 exhaust with chevy V6 exhaust (good flow, still quiet)
~ Rocker and diff armor.
~ Transfer case gears (I know diff gears would be less stress on driveline - BUT I don't think I'll be working driveline too hard with 29" tires)
~ MAYBE Lockrites 'cause Quaddawg likes them so much  ;D Actually, since I'll be going up in now / ice, I'll probably avoid doing lockers 'till I can find a limited slip, or go ARB. Apparently Lockrites are REALLY bad in the snow. So much for the cheap solution :(

Wish I could afford diesel conversion, as I REALLY like diesel... unfortunately I don't have that kind of $$$. Also - I'm FAR more comfortable diagnosing a gaser.

Trail Tough does some nice conversions, a friend had a 1.6 droped in at their shop.  Since they are in Oregon, it isn't to far out of the way for you.  :)

If you are going for light duty trails, I would try out the open diffs before you worry about lockers.  You might not even need them.

If its a manual Track/Kick you can fit auto R&Ps
