Has anybody rolled with the camamini cage installed?
Did it hold up?
How does the cage get tied in?
Does it tie in to the frame?
Is there welding?-Or just bolting?
Dimensions?
Is really all that much cheaper and safer to make your own?
Thanks
-
any info on the calmini cage? ???
-
I am sure it would get damaged in the event of a roll-over and I think it required welding and drilling for the install?
Will look way better, for sure.
-
Im almost 100% sure there is welding required to install it, I remember that from a magazine they sold me
-
For a SideKick?
Heres what i know.
1- Is really all that much cheaper and safer to make your own?  buying the cage is cheaper than having a shop built one from scratch.
2- Is there welding?-Or just bolting?
Yes, there is welding, grinding, and bolting.
3- Does it tie in to the frame?
No, it doesn't tie into the frame (be better if ya did tho)
4- Has  anybody rolled with the camamini cage installed?Did it hold up?
haven't heard anybody rolling one with a Calmini cage in a Kick, yet. I know I've come close, more times than I would like.
5- About so big by so big
-
If you're tall you will need some padding on the cage too, to protect your head.
-
I do not know the demensions. It bolts into the cross members, welding, fitting and notching are required. ;D
-
any volunteers to see how it holds up? ;)
just kidding. I'm sure it's designed well, and will hold up much better than nothing. If Calmini was selling a roll cage that wasn't functional and only for "looks" they would most definatly have to specify that about 20 times on their website. Roll cages are good insurance for your life.
-
It sure does look good though- structurally
I am about 6'1 so I probally would need padding
Is it adviseable to make your own- if you have never made one before?
It is something you wouldn't ot cut shortcuts on
I have a 15 month old girl - I woukd like to give her and my familly some protection!
Myself included Does it protect passengers in the rear?
With a 12 ton pipe bender can you bend tubing the same dimesion as calmini used?
"any volunteers" - that was a good one! ;D
It would be interesting to see how it holds up
Thanks for the help
-
This cage does nmot offer rear protection but i plan on adding on to it.I plan on removing the down tubes ehen i add on.
-
But, to make it stronger you would need a cross brace like so.
This would make the cage stronger and not collapse would rolled over.
-
If your going to bend your own cage up, make sure you use a tube bender instead of a pipe bender.
A pipe bender will weaken the bends where you bend it (There has to be a better way of saying that...).
-
Thanks for the tips
How much are tube benders?
I found a cheapy 12 ton pipe bender at harbor freight for around 80 dollars I belive. glad I didn't get it.
Will that additional brace interfere with the rear passengers at all?
thanks again
-
the cal one looks o.k, i just built a rear cage for my kick, need to add a front exo to it still.
-
You can get your dimensions and stuff and lay out your cage and probably get the material bent at a machine shop for a reasonable price I'm going to build an external cage with 2 inch thin wall carbon like schedule 10 or 20.. which should be stout enough, or you could just weld it out with regular old pipe fittings use small bore piping run straight down through the floor and buttweld directly to frame or build a support with a peice of pipe coming up and go all the way to the roof and use long radius 90's and come across the top with a peice of pipe would be stout as hell still
-
here's a shot of mine, still need to add some gussets and some small pieces for strength.
it'smy first one, not a bad start.

and it fits under the softop. not a good shot, but it fits.

Cool! what material did you use?
How did you do the bending?
How much did it cost?
was it to do?
How long did it take to make?
DId you tie it in to the frame?
IT looks good! That's pretty much what I want. I like how there is protection for the rear. I have a 15 month old girl that rides in the back. I would like to build a cage like yours. Could I get details?
thanks

pipe bender
How much did it cost?
$40, and some wire out of the mig
was it to do?
????
How long did it take to make?
two afternoons
DId you tie it in to the frame?
not in the rear, just mounting plates. it will get tied into a front exo and my sliders.

i have two small kids and a dog, usually one of them is with me.
-
thanks
I meant how hard was the project?
DId you use tubing or pipe?
I like the cost and the results! ;D alot better than paying 400$ for the calmini cage!
What size is the tubing/pipe?
Thanks again!
-
I read about one guy who built his cage out of PVC pipe, then when it was all fitted he took it to a shop and had them bend the tube, went home and welded it in.
I don't know if it would work very well, but it sounds good. :D
-
That does sound like a good idea
-
if your just looking for some mild protection for th eslow roll over, you can also buy pre bent corners in different angles. you just weld them in and presto.
-
For somebody with no experience with cage building wouldn't be better to buy camnini's cage?
I'm also just learning how to mig-weld and I'm not having a very good time with it.
How much would the average cage in an average town cost to make. I know that's general but I was just currious.
ALso what size tubing is the best to use? Thanks again Zukers!
-
I bought a pre-bent Davesport cage for my SJ. I've only droped over once onto some rocks, but the cage didn't budge. It is made of 1.5" x .120" ERW tube, but you don't really need much bigger due to our light vehicles. The other Zuki's in my club use similar size cages and haven't had any complaints.
If you don't trust your welding, I would find someone to help you put the cage in.
I paid around 500 for a full cage because I didn't have time to build it myself before a Moab trip, then did the installation in our shop. That price did not include the back half for the family cage. Since I don't even run a back seat, I saw it as kind of silly. :D
-
they were using that thin of wall tube??? hmm I might have to re-think my cage maybe use schedule 10 1.5" stainless 8) instead of 2inch sched 20 or 40
-
If you not an expert at welding I would suggest you purchase one pre made or goto someone who knows what there doing...
You life depends on this device....if it brake it can do more harm than good
-
He had thicker available, but when I asked him about it he said that it wasn't really needed. I figured he was the expert so I ordered the standard one.
Now that I am used to the 1.5, the 2" just looks fat on the Zuki's. On the other hand, 1.5" looks tiny when you think about putting it on a FJ-40. ;D

Please do not use Stainless... It is meant for small decrotive bolts and bathroom handles.. Sereuosly it is too britle. Usa a minimum 1.5 OD .120 HREW. OR DOM .. If you would like to see what we do with cages I would be more then happy to post up, this is what we specialty cages.
-
stainless isnt brittle if you use seamless dont use erw schedule 10 would probably be a little weak but a schedule 40 ss would do the job... stainless isn't used for decrotive bolts and bathroom handles we are running stainless steam lines off paper machines that are taking 5000psi of steam...so i was probably sounding a little nuts when i said sched 10 1.5 ss but we all get a little nuts at time :))

Call these guys they are the makers for the "Sport Cage"

We had a member of my old jeep club sit in the middle of the woods and watch his wife almost die, ALL DUE TO AN IMPROPERLY BUILT CAGE!!!!!!!!
DO NOT BUILD YOUR OWN CAGE UNLESS YOU ARE AN EXPERIANCED WELDER AND FABRICATOR THAT HAS AN EXPERIANCED CAGE BUILDER/DESIGNER HELPING YOU THROUGH OUT THE BUILD PROCESS AND INSPECTING YOU WORK!!!!!!!!!!!
Any doubts on where I stand on the subject???
Our club member had a violent roll off of a hill that resulted in a bad weld giving away. one of the bars, (spreader bar?) that braces the front dash loop against the loop behind the seat, broke loose and stabbed her in the side. If it was not for having and emergency room trauma surgern on the trail ride she would of died right there on the trail.
We all hope to never need the use of our safety equipment, but it's good to know it's done right if we ever do need it.
PLEASE, let someone experianced in cage fabrication/welding do your cage and/or have them teach you how to properly build one for your needs.

That would suck. :(
I have full faith in the people who welded my cage in place. The only welding I did was to tack the seat belt mounts in position so they could be welded up proper.
