Title: loss of "power" steering
Post by: crikeymike on May 23, 2006, 04:16:50 PM
So a few weeks back i noticed that the power steering in my 93 4door sidekick was getting a little firm when i'm not moving, and so i'd have to make forward or rear motion for it to turn out of a parking spot.  So anyway, this last week it was getting worse so i checked it out a little closer.  No leaks can be found anywhere and there was adequate fluid in the reservoir.  So i added a little fluid to fill the reservoir (It was on the low mark on the dipstick to start), to make it up to the full mark.  Then I cycled the steering to bleed it just in case and this was all to no avail.

I'm trying to figure out now whether it's the power steering pump that's not doing its job, or if it's the steering box.  Neither make any kind of unusual sound or act strange at all.  When the car's driving, it of course drives as if nothing were wrong.

I did some searching and didn't find out much more than i'd already done.

Any hints on determining if it's the pump or the box?  It's the stock power steering that came with the truck and i'm running just 30" tires.

The Goblin's power steering is doing the exact same thing. Only it seems to be intermittant. Sometimes I have power while stopped and sometimes I don't... :-\ I haven't figured it out, either... :-\

Is the belt properly adjusted? Could be slipping under load.

Yeah, the belt is perfect.  I'm heading towards a replacement pump. Since these don't seem to fail that much, i'll probably just get a used one.
