Title: 1.8L sport question?
Post by: JayN on May 27, 2006, 08:19:11 PM
hey guys, my DD 4 door sport has been acting up a little. it is a auto and when i am driving it and come to a stop sign or red light and stop, it idles really low and occasionally stalls. it will climb back to normal rpm's after a few seconds. it is just anoying. i have searched and found nothing for a fix on the 1.8L.  yesterday my service engine soon light came on, as well as my overdrive light was flashing. it has 198K on it, i unhooked the battery for a while today and it got rid of the lights. now just the low idle to fix. any ideas or help?
thanks
Jay.

I would say it has something to do with the Timing.

You can normally change the timing by adjusting the Camshaft Position Sensor and some models even have a resistor timing adjuster that by changing the resisitor it changes the timing. I don't know about the 1.8  but it is a variation of the 2.0 so it will offer one of these options.

my first guess is your egr valve and passage ways are getting cloged.

Jay, it's your throttle body.
it's gunked up.
take off whatever you need to get to it and then get a toothbrush and a couple of old rags and just clean the crap out of it with Gumout or carb/choke cleaner.  flip open thethrottle valve thingy and brush all around it with gumout dowsed toothbrush.  it will run like new.

i know this because that was what was wrong with mine....and everyone here said timing.  LOL

still haven't dealt with this problem. been just dealing with it. noticed that it only has the low idele when it is warm. when the engine is cool it runs great.
any suggestions?
